Linus Tech Tips, first hacked and then closed

Linus Tech Tips is, or at the moment we should say was, a reference channel when it comes to information about technology on YouTube. Created by Linus Sebastian a whopping 15 years ago, in 2008, when concepts such as youtuber did not yet exist and channel monetization was something that had not yet been put on the table. Those were, as I say, other times, in which the motivations for being in the service were quite different from the current ones, and the ecosystem of creators and users was much smaller.

Over the years, the channel grew, adding more and more subscribers until reach more than 15 million with which it currently had, and to accumulate more than 2,500 videos, a whole archive that, on occasions, has also come to attract some first-rate brands, which on occasions have invested directly in it. It is, therefore, a success story of those that are often used as an example of succeeding on the Internet.

It is said that all stories have an ending, although some are full stop, others full stop and others full stop, some are on par with the rest of the story and others are like the end of Los Serrano (a complete disappointment, for those who did not follow the series at the time). And there are some that are difficult to explain, such as Lost, which despite the passing of the years continue to generate all kinds of doubts. The question now is whether Linus Tech Tips’s will be followed, apart or final, but whatever it is, there is no doubt that it has a bit of Los Serrano and a bit of Lost.

Linus Tech Tips, first hacked and then closed

If we try to access the channel, we will find the following message: «This page is not available. Sorry for the disturbances. Try another search.«. And what do we owe this for? Well, as we can read in TechSpot, Linus Tech Tips was hacked and used to display illegal content and as a result has been terminated by YouTube. To be more specific, the attackers who took control of Linus’s channel published several videos of scams based on cryptocurrencies, content that is highly persecuted by the platform.

YouTube usually acts exhaustively in these cases, as soon as it detects that material of this type has been published, it takes measures that can range from deleting the video and punishing the owner of the channel to, as we have seen in multiple cases, especially if several videos have been uploaded, immediately closing it of the Chanel. In this case, the owners can appeal the decision by reporting what happened but, at least in most cases, this is usually useless.

It also seems that the attackers have not been satisfied with bringing down Linus Tech Tips, but rather they would also be trying to take control of other Linus accounts, although fortunately it seems that they have not been successful so far. This, added to the fact that it is unknown how they were able to gain control of the main channel, suggests that, at some point and in some way, they must have been able to access information and/or personal accounts of Linus.
