Livebox 6: UFC-Que Choisir considers that the Orange offer is too expensive

Livebox 6 did not convince UFC-Que Choisir. According to the magazine, the price of Orange’s offer is too high given the speeds displayed by the box and the low availability of Wi-Fi 6E.

Livebox 6 Orange

At the beginning of April 2022, Orange lifted the veil on the Livebox 6. Compatible with Wi-Fi 6E, the box offers a maximum theoretical Wi-Fi speed of 2 Gb/s going down, i.e. 3 times more than with the Livebox 5 , and 800 Mb/s uphill. The incumbent operator offers the package including the new Livebox at a price of 54.99 euros per month.

The Livebox 6 received an enthusiastic reception. The first users found the experience very successful, in particular thanks to high speeds, which sometimes exceed Orange’s estimates. Unfortunately, some users have reported several problems. The testimonials mention bugs with the companion application and too little widespread Wi-Fi 6E to be useful.

The Livebox 6’s Wi-Fi 6E is disappointing according to UFC-Que Choisir

After a few weeks of use, the magazine UFC-Que Choisir published its own test of the Livebox. The consumer advocacy magazine openly believes that the Orange box is too expensive for the new features.

UFC castigates in particular the addition of Wi-Fi 6E, which is still completely useless. “To benefit from the advantages of wi-fi 6E, its equipment (smartphones, computers, etc.) must still be compatible with this new standard”, underlines UFC, mirroring the first opinions of subscribers. It is true that compatible terminals do not jostle each other on the market. However, the situation should change in the years to come.

According to the first tests, the box keeps its promises in terms of speeds. UFC, however, accuses the operator of having lack of ambition on this ground. “Orange has capped that of its Livebox 6 at 2.5 Gb/s, or even less since the only offer available with this box (entitled Max) offers a maximum speed of 2 Gb/s. This will suffice for most customers, but more demanding users might be disappointed”, tackles the UFC. The magazine also regrets that Wi-Fi 6E, although faster and more efficient, offers less network coverage.

This is why the specialist magazine finds that the package offered by Orange does not shine with its value for money. “The new features brought by the Orange Livebox 6 seem very meager given its selling price”tackles the UFC-Que Choisir, stressing that “the bill can quickly climb” in view of “activation fee” claimed for each piece of equipment.
