Lum: in 2022 the new anime adaptation will arrive

At the end of this 2021 which, among other things, has finally seen the mystery of the initials of Lum, comes the news that the famous manga opera by Rumiko Takahashi will be adapted from a new anime for TV.

Lum’s new anime is coming

In reality we are not facing an official announcement, since the revelation comes from an insider leak Sugoi LITE who shared on Twitter the first key visual of the project, the names of the original voice cast and even an unpublished shikishi made by the queen of manga for the occasion.

Sumire Uesaka (Voiced by Hayase Nagatoro in Don’t Torment Me, Nagatoro!) will be Lum’s voice, while Hiroshi Kamiya (Bakemonogatari’s Koyomi Araragi) will voice Ataru Moroboshi.

It was the 1978 when Lum (Urusei Yatsura the original title) broke into the Rising Sun with the manga dedicated to his bizarre adventures published in the magazine Weekly Shonen Sunday of the Kodansha publishing house. Since that moment, the work of sensei Takahashi, the “queen of manga”, has enchanted millions of readers around the world, winning several awards, including the Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen and shojo categories in 1980.

As we know the manga inspired an anime series, very famous in Italy where it arrived in 1983, produced by Kitty Films and the Pierrot and Deen studios, was directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and Kazuo Yamazaki. The anime was followed by six films and twelve OAVs.

Despite the passing of the years, Lum still occupies a special place in the hearts of many children, now adults, and continues to intrigue and excite new readers so much so that Star Comics has published a brand new edition of the manga starting from 2019 and which ended in February this year.

Plot of Lum – Urusei Yatsura

The story of the manga and anime centers on a group of high school students who live in the city of Tomobiki.

One day an alien spaceship loaded with Oni-like creatures from Japanese folklore lands on Earth to take over our planet.

However, the magnanimous invaders offer the human race a single chance of salvation: if a human being, chosen at random by a computer, manages to touch the horns of Lum (the beautiful daughter of the king of the Oni, who wears only a striped bikini) within a maximum of ten days, the Terrà will be spared.

The computerized lottery chooses Ataru Moroboshi, a coarse high school student and womanizer who is immediately interested in the undertaking which, however, is immediately very difficult. Lum can in fact fly, which prevents Ataru, at least initially, from touching the horns of the attractive green-haired alien.

But the mischievous and crafty boy will still succeed in the enterprise which, however, will turn out to be the beginning of his “misfortunes” since the fresh winner makes a marriage proposal to Shinobu, the girl he is in love with, a proposal that instead Lum he thinks it was meant for her.

Thus began the misadventures of the unlikely couple Lum-Ataru as the sexy alien is now believed to be promised to the one who defeated her.
