M1 Max GPU outperforms Mac Pro’s AMD Radeon Pro W6900X graphics card


The data we gave you yesterday is confirmed. When we referenced that the new MacBook pro with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips were on the same level as the best Windows desktops. Now tests indicate that the M1 Max chip makes the computer’s GPU perform better in tests than a 6,000 euro graphics card such as the AMD Radeon Pro W6900X, the one on the Mac Pro.

The new 14 and 16 MacBook Pros with the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips confirm that they will have a very long leadership in the field of computers. Yesterday we told you that to be chips in laptops, the results they were offering could be compared with the most advanced and powerful desktop computers. A new benchmark test with the Affinity tool shows that the M1 Max’s GPU outperforms the AMD Radeon Pro W6900X in some tasks.

The AMD Radeon Pro W6900X is a model based on the RDNA 2 architecture. It has 5,120 shaders, 320 texturing units, 128 raster units, 256-bit bus and 32GB of 16GHz GDDR6 memory.

The benchmarks were conducted by Andy Somerfield, lead developer of the popular Affinity Photo image editor. In a Twitter thread, Somerfield details how the Affinity team has been optimizing their software for Apple Silicon chips since the first version of Affinity Photo for iPad.

Affinity has developed its own tool to measure the performance of tasks related to its applications, such as Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. For example, the developer explains that Affinity Photo works best with a GPU that has high computing performance, fast on-chip bandwidth, and fast transfer in and out of the GPU. The faster GPU than the Affinity team had tested on their benchmark tool it was the expensive AMD Radeon Pro W6900X, which Apple sells for 6440 euros.

In the test, the GPU of Apple got a score of 32891while AMD’s GPU followed with 32,580 benchmarks. Of course, as the developer explains, this does not mean that the M1 Max GPU performs better in all tasks:

But it definitely shows how capable Apple’s chips are, and also that they may be better for image editing than a high-end dedicated GPU.
