Marvel, DC and Star Wars are ruining cinema according to Independence Day director

In full promotion of his new disaster film, Roland Emmerich has not been kind to the big licenses Marvel, Star Wars and DC.

Are Marvel and Star Wars Killing the Film Industry? At least that’s what Roland Emmerich, director ofindependence day. In the midst of a promotional campaign for his new film moonfall, the filmmaker was not kind to the licenses now held by Disney. During an interview with Den of Geek, Emmerich returned to the dominant position of Disney and particularly of these two star franchises. Asked about the evolution of the genre of disaster films, he confides:

“Naturally, Marvel, DC Comics and Star Wars pretty much took over. It ruins our industry a bit, because nobody does anything original anymore”. He adds “I simply never found any interest in this kind of film”.

This is not the first time that he has attacked Marvel productions, as the American media reminds us. In the past, he had admitted to having watched several films of the genre to fall asleep during long plane journeys. Critics far from being rave reviews. Difficult to prove him wrong, while many sequels, reboots and other remakes are on the program for the next few years in dark rooms. A feeling shared by big names in the 7th art, starting with Martin Scorsese who declared in 2019 that Marvel films were fundamentally “not cinema”.

Christopher Nolan, the savior

Rather than a simple acerbic reply against the firm with the big ears, Emmerich especially points out the difficulty for the directors to have their original projects financed. He explains that unless he makes a film inspired by a successful license, finding producers for original scenarios is sometimes a challenge, even for him who has a certain reputation in the genre of disaster films. “You have to make bold new films. And I think Christopher Nolan is the master of that. He’s someone who can make films about whatever he wants. I have a little more difficulty, but I still have a rather big name, especially when it is a disaster film or linked to this universe”.

moonfallhis new film with Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson (Conjuring), is due to hit our screens on next February 9. As a mysterious force propels the Moon out of orbit, a former astronaut is convinced she holds the key to saving Earth. Only two people believe her: an astronaut and a conspiracy theorist with whom she will partner for an impossible mission in space.
