Matrix 4: Laurence Fishburne won’t be in the movie (and doesn’t know why)

When Matrix 4 was announced now more than two years ago, fans of the saga were expecting the return to the big screen of Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Ann Moss and Laurence Fishburne, actors with a key role in the original trilogy.

While Keanu Reeves is Carrie-Ann Moss will be present in the fourth installment of the franchise, Laurence Fishburne will not be there and … not even he understands why.

Laurence Fishburne talks about his absence in Matrix 4

In a recent interview with Collider, Fishburne was asked if he was tired of being asked if he was in the film. La’ttore then responded by saying: “I understand it perfectly, it makes sense. It makes sense that people keep asking me… I’m not in the next Matrix movie and you should ask Lana Wachowski why, because I don’t have an answer for you ”.

Fishburne will still be in the fourth installment of a different action franchise, again starring Keanu Reeves, reprising his part of The Bowery King for John Wick 4.

Reeves and Moss will both appear in the fourth Matrix film instead. And the thing that makes their involvement in the film, as well as the lack of a Fishburne appearance more surprising, is that both of their characters died at the end of Matrix Revolutions (or so it would appear), the final installment of the original trilogy. 2003, while Morpheus was still very much alive.

That said, it’s possible that the upcoming film takes place entirely within a new version of The Matrix, one in which Neo and Trinity have been reanimated into new bodies, a world without Morpheus who, instead, lives in the real world.

The upcoming new movie will also see many new faces, including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Besides Jessica Henick (Iron Fist), Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantum), Andrew Caldwell (iZombie) is Christina Ricci (who previously collaborated with the Wachowskis on Speed Racer).

Lana Wachowski has also enlisted a number of former cast members of her hit Netflix series, Sense8, including Eréndira Ibarra, Max Riemelt, Brian J. Smith is Toby Onwumere.

Originally scheduled to premiere on May 21 this year, the fourth Matrix film is now scheduled to premiere in theaters, and on HBO Max, on December 22, 2021.
