Metaverse: Be careful not to do these things if you are in the virtual universe

Following the recent event of Facebook, in which it officially changed its name to Meta and announced the creation of a virtual universe called metaverse, a large number of companies and users have begun to pronounce on the matter, either in favor, against or simply to share recommendations to regulate the new space.

But before going into detail about the possible regulations, it is necessary to understand the meaning of the metaverse. In the words of Mark Zuckerberg, the metaverse is the virtual environment of the future to which it will be possible to enter, instead of simply seeing a screen.

In this virtual world it will be possible to carry out any activity with virtual reality devices, augmented reality glasses and applications.

Although, it is true that the metaverse It had existed since the beginning of the so-called web 2.0, it was until this last Facebook event that the term rose in popularity, as it was seen as a “tangible” bet that would become a “reality” in the coming years.

Now one of the creators of the first metaverse, that is, of the classic Second Life, has given some tips to create the foundation on which the internet of the future will be built. According to the statements of Philip Rosedale, who is one of the founders of Second Life, there are several recommendations to follow.

Rosedale’s first tip is that, beyond experience, the most critical point is creating a moderation system that allows users to coexist equitably in this “new universe”.

As a second point, Philip points out that the metaverse must keep the identity of users hidden who participate in it, a fine line between privacy and transparency, which could call into question the right of users to remain anonymous on the network.

There are things like getting the correct identity (…) when it comes to identifying the real person behind the avatar. The avatar or pseudonym of the person has to be stable enough [real], since their actions have consequences and they have to behave well. We don’t yet have identity systems that allow for strong governance.

The creator of Second Life also claims that ads may not be part of this network, or that these could not be exploited as efficiently as is currently the case in social networks, since the ad-based metaverse can be a bad experience for users, especially if they pay to access.
