The firm Micron has presented the first microSD card with a storage capacity of 1.5 TB, a model that responds to an important “problem” that we have been seeing for a long time, and that is that there are smartphones and other mobile devices with microSD card support up to 2TB capacitybut there were no drives with more than 1TB of capacity yet.
This new microSD card from Micron falls short of that 2TB maximum, but it does come remarkably close to the increase the maximum capacity up to 1.5 TB. This model is identified as the Micron i400, it is the first of its kind to use 176-layer 3D NAND memory and will be available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 1.5TB versions. The company has not given details on the sale prices, but it is clear that they will not be affordable, something understandable considering its maximum capabilities.
In terms of capacity, these new microSD cards represent an important advance, But are they up to the task in terms of performance? This is very important, since in the end those professionals who work with high-resolution content want to have not only a high storage capacity, but also a recording speed that allows them to optimally cover their needs.
Micron has confirmed that these new microSD cards are fast enough to gRecord 4K video while processing up to 8 AI events per second, such as object detection, license plate classification or facial recognition. They also have a long useful life, at least according to the company, since they can work continuously recording video (24 hours) for a period of 5 years and also have resistance to water and shock. They can work under temperatures up to 85 degrees C.
This new line of microSD cards from Micron are especially aimed at the professional sector, both for capacity and performance, and should reach the market in the coming weeks. As we said, their prices have not yet been disclosed.
