Microsoft finally fixes this 5-year-old bug on Windows

It took 5 years before Microsoft fixed this very annoying bug in Firefox on Windows. All the while, Mozilla’s browser was causing way too much CPU usage. All versions of the operating system have received the patch, which has significantly increased the performance of affected PCs.

Admittedly, Firefox is not (or rather, no longer) really the most popular browser in the world. According to the latest data from SatCounter, the software’s market share continues to decline, unable to contend with the Chrome juggernaut and the growing influence of Edge. Suffice to say that with only 6.48% of users, the red panda is not really the priority when it comes to fixing bugs.

This certainly explains the time it took Microsoft to fix a bug that was truly disabling. The latter caused far too much user CPU usage on various versions of Windows, a nice irony knowing that this is one of the main criticisms of its competitors, Chrome in the lead. The problem is now fixed. Still, we had to wait no less than 5 years.

5 years later, Firefox works normally again on Windows

The problem was therefore linked to the Windows Defender Antimalware Service Executable process, which explains why all users of the operating system were affected. “According to Microsoft, this update will be rolled out to all users as part of regular definition updates, which are released separately from operating system updates”, said Yannis Juglaret, developer at Mozilla on the forums of the organization.

This therefore means that users who remained on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will also receive this patch. As a reminder, Firefox will remain compatible on Windows 7 at least until 2024, making this update all the more interesting. If you haven’t received it yet, it should be soon. Several users indeed report that the performance of their PC has increased significantly after installing the Microsoft patch.
