Microsoft makes an important decision for your wallet

Microsoft will indeed review its automatic renewal policy for its Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold services. The American giant will be able to cancel or refund inactive subscriptions, even in France.

A few days ago, we were talking about Microsoft’s decision to review its renewal policy for Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold services. In the United Kingdom, the Redmond company has decided to make its subscriptions more flexible and to better regulate the notion of automatic renewal. An approach that will ultimately not only concern British lands, as confirmed by the American company at The Verge site. “The changes to inactive subscriptions will first be rolled out in the UK and will soon be available globally”explained a Microsoft spokesperson.

This new approach is not a gift from the firm which has just offered Activision-Blizzard. Pinned by the British competition authority (CMA), the Xbox manufacturer has decided to react by making several improvements to Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live Gold accounts.

What changes for French subscribers?

Specifically, Microsoft plans to provide “more transparent and more direct information” to help players better understand their subscription. This concerns automatic renewal or requesting a refund after an accidental renewal.

As we indicated a few days ago, it will also contact subscribers who have a 12-month renewable subscription to offer them the possibility of ending it and being reimbursed on a pro rata basis. The other changes concern inactive subscriptions whose payment may be suspended in the absence of action by the player. Better monitoring of information during a possible price increase is also on the program.

These changes will affect French Xbox players, on a date that has not yet been specified by Microsoft. For its part, the British competition authority (CMA) hopes that other companies will take up the question of automatic renewal. The Chief Executive of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) explains: “Other companies that offer auto-renewing memberships and subscriptions should take note and review their practices to ensure they comply with consumer protection law”.

The Xbox Game Pass is at the heart of the strategy of a Microsoft more powerful than ever in the world of video games. The firm has just announced the acquisition of the Activision Blizzard group for 68.7 billion dollars and its service currently has 25 million subscribers.
