Microsoft prepares a new Windows registry editor inside PowerToys

Microsoft just released a new version of PowerToys, the “toolbox” for the most coffee users of Windows -although in reality, anyone can take advantage of the advanced functions that these small utilities bring with them- and it brings hardly any news, except one that is not yet ready for action, but judging by those who They have been able to test it already, it promises: Registry Preview.

Its name says it all, right? So, along with a bunch of fixes that ultimately make up the bulk of this PowerToys update comes Registry Preview, a new Windows registry editor which would be destined to replace the classic editor in the near future or, at least, to complement it, although the latter doesn’t seem to make much sense a priori either: with a single application that works well, it’s plenty. Or should.

Judging by the preview they publish on TechRepublic, Registry Preview would be a well-positioned option for this, since it “simplifies the process of viewing and modifying the contents of the standard Windows registry editor.”

According to what they say, Registry Preview allows users to simplify the process of viewing the contents of the Windows registry and making changes directly from the tool, bypassing the standard editing tool.” It would be, in short, a more accessible alternative for those who regularly dive into the Windows registry, so everything seems to indicate that yes, sooner rather than later it will be the reference for these tasks.

However, and as you remember in the publication, it should be noted that editing the Windows registry is not foolish and, without knowing what you are doing, you can make a mess of it in the system, causing serious problems. On the other hand, many times it is the only way to touch up this or that and, without any other way of doing things, this process will continue to be used no matter what.

Therefore, and even if redundant is not the best strategy, it may be that the classic registry editor is kept as it is for those who need it from time to time and this new Registry Preview is reserved for experienced users or those who come to the tool more often, since PowerToys must first be known, then installed second.

If you want to see a bit more of the Registry Preview, take a look at the linked article; but keep in mind that the Preview of the name is not for decoration: it is a application under development without stable version at the moment. When I have it we will review it. In the meantime, you can download the new version of PowerToys on GitHub.

If you have never touched it and have doubts, this is almost all you need to know about PowerToys. And it also doesn’t hurt that you learn how to make a backup copy of the Windows registry.
