Frequent Windows 11 users will no doubt have noticed that Microsoft engineers have been experimenting with the taskbar for some time of their OS, in “Search” specifically. The Redmond firm has been placing advertisements more or less discreetly in Windows 11 for several months. The suggestions window that opens when you click here is an example.

Note that this menu exclusively promotes Microsoft products. So, rather than your default browser, Edge will open if you click on one of the recommendations. This is not a problem if you are already a user of Microsoft services. Otherwise, it can be downright irritating. And the situation does not seem likely to change anytime soon.

Windows 11 optional update KB5023778 will show ads in search bar

It is whispered like this in the next optional Windows 11 22H2 update, Microsoft will offer a feature called “Notifications for Microsoft Accounts”. The company’s detractors believe that behind the personalized advice it will provide, hides a vast campaign of self-promotion. Microsoft would like us to use its services… with wear and tear. The example given by Bleeping Computer is a good illustration of this.

If you rightly believe that this recommendation is sensible and you click on the “Back up your files” option, the OS will try to make you use OneDrive, the in-house file hosting solution, or make you create a Windows account, if you haven’t already. note that KB5023778 does not contain a security patch, therefore it is optional.
