Microsoft Teams is now 50% more efficient

The Redmond giant has confirmed that Microsoft Teams is now up to 50% more efficient than a year and a half ago, a figure that confirms a significant improvement and that, obviously, would not have been possible without the optimizations that the company has introduced at the level of resource consumption, both CPU and GPU.

Robert Aichner, Principal Group Program Manager at Microsoft in the Intelligent Communication and Conversation Cloud (IC3) group, explained that this improvement in terms of efficiency has been verified in different usage scenarioswhich include group video calls and the use of the screen sharing function.

As expected, more efficient operation of Microsoft Teams reduces energy consumption, and although it is true that this may represent a minimum value when applied to a single device, if we think of a large company with thousands of PCs using Microsoft Teams the thing change, and that savings can turn into a considerable sum of money.

According to Robert Aichner:

“In addition to reduce energy coststhese optimizations reduce hardware load of an organization and improve the consistency and efficiency of Teams meeting and calling experiences across devices. One of the challenges posed by the ubiquity of Teams is the need to create equitable experiences across an incredibly diverse ecosystem of Windows devices. We are committed to ensuring great calling and meeting experiences for users with low-end hardware, as well as high-end workstations and high-resolution monitors.”

Very interesting, but we must not make the mistake of thinking that this has been something that has been achieved overnight. As we can see in the attached graph, Microsoft had spent months working on numerous optimizations that have had an effect on such important aspects as the video rendering engine and GPU rendering optimizationwhich allows you to use hardware-based acceleration.

In all, the current version of Microsoft Teams is now eIt’s 52% more efficient than the June 2020 version, and the Redmond giant has confirmed that it intends to continue working to introduce new optimizations that will further improve the efficiency of said platform. To do this, it will continue to collaborate with the main manufacturers of CPUs and GPUs, that is, with companies of the caliber of NVIDIA, AMD and Intel.
