we tried the most impressive external monitors for your 16″ MacBook Pro with image quality to match this fantastic laptop and that you can take anywhere to work with a triple monitor system.
The 16″ MacBook Pro is a wonderful laptop for power and performance, but it has a limitation typical of laptops: its screen. I am not questioning its quality, which is beyond doubt, but its size. We are getting used to working on large monitors, or even on multiple monitorswhich offer you a large desktop to place windows at will, and a 16″ screen, being a very good size for viewing multimedia content or even for writing or performing other more routine tasks, it seems small when you have to edit video, audio or images.
That’s why the idea of a portable monitor that you can take anywhere, like your MacBook, is ideal for many of us. And if instead of one there are two monitors, well, what do you want me to tell you? And not only that, it’s that above the quality of these dual monitors that Monduo offers us has little to envy to that of the 16-inch MacBook Pro screen.
Characteristics
Monduo 16″ Pro Duo is the name of these dual monitors that we can place on our 16″ MacBook Pro, although it can also work with other laptops of the same size. You may have seen similar products on the market, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find something that meets such close specs to those offered by the fantastic screen of the Apple laptop:
- IPS LED screen format 16:10
- Resolution 2560×1600
- refresh rate 144Hz
- Response time 3ms
- Brightness 500 nits
- Color 100% DCI-P3
- Connections: miniHDMI, 2xUSB-C (each monitor)
- 100W Pass Through Load
- Weight 1.9kg
- Touch physical controls on each monitor
The placement of the screens is quite simple and fast. The first few times you may feel awkward doing it, but immediately you will see that in a couple of minutes you have everything perfectly set up to work on your MacBook as if you were at your desk at work or at home. In addition, everything you need for the connections is included in the boxincluding 2 USB-C to USB-C cables of different lengths, a miniHDMI to HDMI cable in case you want to use that connection with your laptop, and a USB-C to USB-C charging cable, plus a 90º adapter by if you want to use a different cable.
If you connect the monitors via USB-C to your laptop, you will not have to add any type of power supply, because it will be the same laptop that feeds them. If you opt for HDMI, you will need to supply power to the monitor that you connect through this type of connection. Two USB-C ports on each monitor offer plenty of options, so you won’t have any problem finding the configuration that works best for you. With a 16″ MacBook there’s not much to think about: two USB-C to USB-C cables and voila, all working.
From my experience during these weeks, the MacBook offers you about 3 hours of work with the screens connected and using the battery. Obviously the autonomy of the laptop is reduced if you connect the monitors without any type of external power supply, but It is not an exorbitant consumption that prevents you from working directly with the battery, not much less. Of course, whenever you can, it’s better to work connected to the current.
As for the stability of the “Monitors-MacBook” set, the truth is that it has surprised me a lot for the better. You can adjust the angle of inclination of the laptop monitor, and make the whole assembly stable thanks to a tab on the bottom rear of the center piece of the Monduo Pro Duo and that you unfold to act as a “center leg” . You can also adjust the angle of the two side monitors, so you’ll find the perfect arrangement for your work, and it won’t move without a millimeter during it.
The whole thing is striking, very striking indeed, and anyone who sees it is going to be impressed by this laptop with three monitors that create a large panoramic desktop with which to work is a real delight. You will be the absolute protagonist in any Starbucks, there is no doubt about that. Everything is designed with the MacBook Pro 16″ in mind, but you can use any similar laptop thanks to the fact that the system is adjustable in width. Of course, in the case of the Apple MacBook everything is perfectly aligned from the moment you place the monitorsIf your laptop has more frames, or a screen with a different ratio, it may not look as good.
Software
Many times a good product is greatly affected by software that is not up to the task, but this is not the case. The software that Monduo offers us to control its monitors on our Mac is a true marvel that makes everything very simple, but at the same time offers you infinite options to get adjustments to your liking. You have the option to sync everything with your MacBook: resolution, scaling, brightness and display alignment, all automatically. You control the brightness of your MacBook and it is adjusted equally on your Monduo monitors, the same as if you turn off your main screen, the side screens are turned off.
Image quality
Monduo screens don’t have the same quality as your MacBook screen, that’s for sure, but for most of the time that you use them you will not notice any differences, because they are really good. Keeping them the same size helps keep everything perfectly aligned, and while the Pro Duo’s pixel density is a bit lower than the MacBook Pro’s, the scaling will allow you to see everything very evenly across all screens.
In the video I have put the screens in the worst possible situation: HDR scenes with black backgrounds and low light in the room. Obviously, the miniLED screen of the MacBook Pro stands out there, but you can see that the performance of the screens is quite good most of the time. These Monduo Pro Duo are as close to your MacBook screen as you’re going to get without buying another MacBook or an iPad Pro.
Editor’s Opinion
Working with your laptop anywhere with a triple monitor system is something unimaginable for many, but it is a reality thanks to these Monduo Pro Duo monitors. Its image quality is on par with what a laptop like the MacBook Pro deserves, and its automatic configuration and the configuration options offered by the Monduo application are an addition that increases the value of this set. Obviously its price is a reflection of all these virtues, but if you really need it, it sure won’t let you down. You can buy it on the Monduo website with free worldwide shipping for €746.95 (link)
