Monoprice Monolith Unveils Two New THX Certified LCR Loudspeakers

Monoprice is a rather “curious” manufacturer, since in its catalog we can find everything from cables, adapters, 3D printers, headphones and much more. However, in its catalog we also find the series Monoprice Monolith, a range of speakers designed for home cinema that we could call cheap but that are THX certified. A range that is expanding with new models, both LCR and small satellite speakers.

The new speakers join the three new subwoofers that the manufacturer introduced just a few days ago, the M-210, M-212 and M-215. All of them have THX Ultra certification and a curious design with two drivers placed vertically. The new models presented also offer something different from what has been seen so far, with a wall-mountable design.

On one hand we have the Monoprice Monolith M-OW3, a curious speaker in the shape of a sound bar that combines the three front speakers. It has also been presented Monolith M-OW1, a speaker that we can use as front, center or even as surround. And finally we have the Monolith Compact Satellitesmall satellite speakers designed to be used as surround sound speakers.

All speakers have THX Select certified (ie suitable for rooms up to 500 square meters). On the other hand, all models are constructed from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and feature rounded-edge enclosures with a matte black finish. As for the technical part, everyone has a 4 ohm impedance, so we’ll need to make sure we have a compatible AV receiver or amplifier. And of course, all the speakers can be wall-mounted via a keyhole slot on the back. Let’s take a look at what they offer individually.

Monoprice Monolith M-OW3

The Monoprice Monolith M-OW3 it’s a curious speaker with the width and overall look of a sound bar. in the same unit the front left, center, and right channel speakers are combined in an LCR configuration that can be mounted on the wall. The LCR design eliminates the need for separate speakers for the left, center, and right channels. The good part is that this configuration saves a lot of space. The bad news is that we have very little separation between channels.

Although the Monoprice Monolith M-OW3 looks like a soundbar, it can’t be connected directly to your TV. If you look at the back, it only has speaker connection terminals for the three channels. Namely, in order to use the M-OW3 we will have to connect it to an amplifier or an AV receiverjust like any other speaker.

On a technical level, the M-OW3 incorporates three 4.5-inch polypropylene woofers, three 25mm silk dome tweeters and six 4.5″ polypropylene cone shaped passive radiators that help extend low-frequency performance. With all this, they offer a frequency response of 70Hz ~ 20kHz, a sensitivity of 84.7 dB and a recommended amplification power of between 50 and 150 watts.

Although the OW-1 speakers can be used as surround channel speakers, some may find them a bit large for this use. That is why Monoprice has also launched the Monolith Compact Satellite, very compact speakers intended to be used as rear speakers or even as height channels for Dolby Atmos setups.

They are made up of a 4.5-inch polypropylene cone woofer and a 20mm silk dome tweeter with waveguide. They offer a frequency response of 80Hz ~ 20kHz and a sensitivity of 81.03 dB. They have dimensions of 153 x 160 x 150 mm.
