More Philips TVs in 2021 will receive support for 4K 120Hz playback with VRR enabled

A few days ago we learned that the Philips OLED806 would receive support to offer content in 4K at 120 Hz with VRR mode activated. Now, we can confirm all 2021 models that will receive this update.

All thanks to the Fellow FlatPanelsHD, who have contacted Philips to confirm all manufacturer’s TVs that could be upgraded to enjoy 4K at 120Hz in VRR mode.

Note that all 2021 Philips OLED TVs with HDMI 2.1 ports have the ability to play 4K content at 120 Hz at full resolution. The problem is that, when VRR is added, the resolution drops by half. A limitation marked by the processor and that cannot be solved in all cases.

Philips OLED TVs in the 9 series will not receive this update

Philips OLED 936

From what the Dutch manufacturer has indicated, The Philips OLED706, OLED806 and OLED856 Smart TVs will be the ones that will receive the update to be able to offer 4K at 120 Hz with the VRR mode activated. The firm has also indicated that the newest model, the Philips OLED807 from 2022, will also have this function, but they do not know if natively or through an update.

As Philips has indicated in its answer «Philips 2021 single chip OLED TVs – OLED 806 etc – can currently display 4K 120Hz content in full resolution and we can confirm that they will be updated in 2022 to be able to display 4k 120Hz VRR content in full resolution«. In this way, although they have not indicated when they will release the update, we can confirm that these models will receive a firmware update.

Yes, unfortunately, the most vitaminized models of its OLED family will be left out of this update. We are talking about the 9 series, with the impressive Philips OLED936 and Philips OLED986. The manufacturer has indicated that its particular structure, which uses two processors, makes it impossible to add this function.

For the OLED+936/986, which are our most exclusive TVs, we’ve selected a special dual-chip image processing engine to ensure the best possible picture quality. Our most critical decision was whether our most exclusive TVs should be dual chip without 4K 120Hz VRR at full resolution or single chip with 4K 120HZ VRR and we believe – given the extremely limited availability of genuine 4k 120Hz VRR content – that the benefits of Dual-chip PQs exceed the ability to display 4K 120Hz at full resolutionthe company said.

Thus, Philips OLED 936 and 986 Smart TVs will not support 4K at 120Hz with VRR mode enabled. The firm indicated that they are assessing how to add this feature to their dual-processor televisions, but it will probably only be for future models, so the company’s two great workhorses will not have this feature through an update. . But at least we already know all the brand’s OLED TVs that will receive this long-awaited update.
