More than 40% of computers are still unable to upgrade to Windows 11

One year after the launch of Windows 11, there are still more than 40% of computers working they can’t install it because of the hardware requirements that Microsoft has set for it to install and run on a computer. This has been pointed out by the asset management provider Lansweeper, which has passed a CPU test to some 27 million computers from 60,000 organizations, and which indicates that 42.76% have not passed it.

The reasons why these computers cannot be upgraded to Windows 11, or installed, are varied. But one of the main ones is that do not have a CPU that has the TPM module enabled (Trusted Platform Module, or Trusted Platform Module). This component is a chip, integrated in many computers and processors, it has been developed to make the computer more secure and prevent the execution of harmful software.

Microsoft prevents Windows 11 from installing on computers that do not have CPUs with TPMs. It is possible to bypass this restriction, yes, although it is complicated, the solution is not perfect and nothing guarantees that it will work for a long time. Despite the high percentage of computers that are still not compatible with Windows 11, the situation has improved somewhat compared to last year, when 57.26% were incompatible with it.

Roel Decneut, Head of Strategy at Lansweeperpoints out that they are aware that computers that cannot install Windows 11 will continue with Windows 10, and that although companies are prepared to upgrade their fleet of computers to ones that meet the requirements for the latest Microsoft operating system, there are «other matters affecting the adoption of Windows 11 that are outside of Microsoft’s control. Disruption of the global supply chain has created a shortage of processors, although many have chosen to stick with the hardware they have at the moment, due to the financial crisis«.

There is currently no shortage of computer CPUs, but there is a shortage of demand, because companies believe that their budgets should not leave room for expenses that they can avoid, due to worsening economic conditions. However, Windows 11 has good growth prospects throughout 2023, as more and more companies decide to upgrade their older computers.

For now, the system is still quite a minority, since only 2.61% of users have switched to it, a growth of 1.17% since last April. It has finally surpassed Windows XP, although it is still below Windows 7 (3.38%). For now, Windows 10 remains the most popular Windows operating system, with 81.87% of all computers.
