MWC 2022: our handling of the Honor Magic 4 Pro, the new photo pro

Honor presented at MWC 2022 its latest flagship, the Magic 4 Pro. We were able to take control of this spectacularly designed smartphone with its huge photo block to give you our first impressions.

Recently presented in China, the international launch of the Magic 4 Pro – at the rather hefty price of 1099 euros in France – was the focus of all attention at MWC Barcelona. The smartphone only stayed there for a few short hours, but we were able to approach it for a few minutes.

A power monster with its Snadragon 8 Gen 1, Honor’s latest is also quite imposing in terms of measurements, weighing 215 grams and 9.15 mm thick. In practice, however, these dimensions are not too inconvenient. The case is well balanced, narrow enough for a comfortable grip. Visually, this Magic also seems thinner than it actually is thanks to its elegant curves. But there is no need to hide your face, lovers of small format and discretion will prefer a Galaxy S22, poles apart in terms of style.

A shiny back that is a little “too much”

If the design exudes quality, Honor’s choice of an extremely shiny and reflective glass back is not the best idea. Dust seems to accumulate quickly around the photo block and fingerprints are inevitableeven particularly visible on the black and gold version, a little less on the cyan.

It’s also hard to take your eyes off the huge circular photo block. This huge “Eye of Muse” as Honor calls it added to the gold color will not necessarily be to the taste of a European public accustomed to much wiser models. But those who want to be noticed will undoubtedly find their account.

The screen looks pretty flawless

Side face, there is only for the giant 6.8-inch screen, with ultra-thin borders of just under a millimeter, barely visible on the side edges thanks to the curvature of the slab. The latter, with AMOLED technology, seems to be of good quality (to be checked, however, during our tests), but its curvature, on the other hand, is mainly present on the sides, much less visible at the top and bottom of the screen, whereas Honor announced her presence on all four sides.

Note also that the punch at the top of the screen is large since it contains in addition to the front camera a 3D camera for more secure facial recognition.

A promising photo block

Difficult to say on an unfinished version, if the quality of the shots will be there. With such an impressive photo block, we hope that will be the case. On a few photos taken quickly, the portrait mode seemed to us quite effective (with main sensor and front sensor). A notebook photographed in a completely dark area also offers satisfactory.

On the other hand, the zoom part was not very convincing. But with living room lighting and software that will likely be updated before launch, there’s a good chance things will work out. We are in any case eager to test this Magic 4 Pro which could land in France from April.
