Netflix will turn to soap operas

Just a few days ago we told you that Netflix had advanced part (important) of the news that will arrive on the platform in 2022. As you could already read then, we can expect some very high budget productions, with consecrated names in the current audiovisual ecosystem. It seems that the company is still betting on its own production, and that it wants to fill the platform with top-of-the-line content that, without a doubt, is what gives the most notoriety.

Now, can video-on-demand platforms live exclusively on this type of blockbuster? If we spend some time analyzing consumer preferences, this seems not so clear. And services like Netflix know it well, and Consequently, they work to have an offer that is as diverse as possible.with several especially outstanding titles, but a great “closet bottom” with which to satisfy the most varied demands.

Thus, as we can read in Business Insider, Netflix is already working very actively to increase its offer of soap operas. Yes, indeed, the endless series, with plots in which loves, heartbreaks and betrayals are the main protagonists, and that despite having much humbler budgets than the big productions I mentioned before, have managed to hook millions and millions of people, already for several generations, who every day (or week, in some cases) wait to know if Doctor Salazar has recovered from the car accident, if the beautiful Flor already knows that her fiancé has been unfaithful to her, and if someone has amnesia.

this move would be the answer to the success of Café con aroma de mujera soap opera of Colombian origin that in recent weeks has been providing stratospheric viewing data, to the point of having reached 326.91 million hours viewed only during its first month on Netflix, despite not being available, for example, in the United States. Unidos, where the Latin audience can enjoy it on other platforms.

But this is not, far from it, the first success story with soap operas. We can recall, for example, the unexpected and huge success in the summer of 2018 of La Casa de las Floresa Mexican production that is supposed to be “crazy” (even the platform labels it that way) and funny that triumphed on both sides of the Atlantic, and that even gave rise to some memes that became quite popular for a while.

So, currently There are six Netflix productions in the field of soap operas. Some of them, such as Pálpito, of Colombian origin, are practically ready to be released, while others like Madre de Alquiler begin production this February, so we can expect their arrival closer to the end than the middle of anus.

With this move, Netflix intends to change its trend towards stagnation in Latin America, a region in which this type of content is always very well received. However, and if these productions reach all the markets that Netflix covers, they can work quite well in other geographies as well, given that for many people, from practically all demographic groups, the soap opera is a guilty pleasure (although in more and more cases the guilt is dispensed with and they are enjoyed openly), capable of being as or even more addictive than blockbusters.
