New Galaxy S smartphones will be made up of recycled fishing nets

At the very moment when the South Korean tech giant in the face of Samsung officially announces its new line of Galaxy S 2022 on February 9, i.e. tomorrow, the presented phones, as it became known, will be partially made of a new material that is slightly more resistant to various damages. And if we delve into the details, then just yesterday the corporation announced that it had finally begun to use the so-called “ocean plastic” made from discarded fishing nets and not only in its latest devices.

What’s more, the tech giant also revealed that the company will first include this rather eco-friendly material in products it’s announcing tomorrow, before eventually using it in all of its other product lines. Continuing to refer to Samsung’s messages, it is more than reasonable to assume that this new material can actually help the environment to a very large extent. It is impossible to argue with the fact that plastic bottles and food plastic bags are the main and most significant representatives of all ocean debris.

For example, for the most part, it is from them that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch consists. We should also not forget about microplastics, as well as the discarded fishing nets mentioned above, because they are the ones that concern marine biologists to a greater extent. Abandoned fishing gear leads to so-called “ghost fishing,” a phenomenon where these tools continue to catch and kill marine life, including endangered species such as the Hawaiian monk seal. More than 640,000 tons of fishing nets are thrown away every year, and the problem is getting worse every year. So if not dramatically, then at least to a small extent, Samsung can help the environment cope with this scourge.

It’s much better than doing nothing at all. But one way or another, the aforementioned giant is still not the first company that decided to use discarded garbage in its devices. Microsoft announced the Ocean Plastic Mouse last year. This computer mouse has a body made from 20 percent recycled plastic. Like Microsoft, Samsung is positioning the use of ocean plastic as part of its larger sustainability agenda. And yes, in 2019, under pressure from consumers and environmentalists, the company announced that it would start using more environmentally friendly materials in the packaging of its devices. So now, as we can see, the company is finally starting to deliver on its promise.
