From 2020 to the present we have faced and encountered very unexpected situations. Currently, it is essential to have a computer at home for everything or at least a smartphone. For this reason, there has been a high demand due to the pandemic that, at the same time, forced the closure of factories.
Complicated situation in a busy market
We cannot say that only the pandemic has affected the sale of new components. Except for the SSD and RAM memory, we have seen how the rest of hardware has gone up in price. The product that has risen the most in price has been graphics cards and, in particular, those from NVIDIA. If the situation was already complicated, the increase in the cost of the hardware makes it more difficult for the user to update.
IDC, a renowned market research company, has released a new PC sales report. According to the report, for this year 2023 some are estimated PC sales close to the 260 million units. In 2022, some 290 million systems were sold, which represents a drop in sales of 30 million PCs, which is equivalent to a sales decrease of 10.7%.
We have to emphasize that the big blow will not be taken by the PC market, it will be taken by the tablet market. The report speaks of a sales forecast of 124 million units, a drop of 12% compared to 2022.
Returning to the PC market, we must highlight that in 2021 over 350 million teams were sold. It represents a decrease in sales of more than 100 million systems. Obviously, this has a brutal impact on Intel, AMD and NVIDIA, the three main manufacturers of processors and/or graphics cards.
Indirectly, these data affect other component manufacturers, such as ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock, EVGA, etc. Those affected the most are Corsair, Kingston, Samsung, Crucial, and other manufacturers of SSDs and RAM. We cannot forget peripheral manufacturers such as Logitech, Newskill, Corsair and many others that will also be affected.
That trees do not prevent us from seeing the forest
It is true that the data is negative, but we come from a market with “artificial” sales. Computer sales have risen in a surreal way due to a certain event that has happened. We are now in the aftermath, a brutal fall that takes us to a period worse than before the anomalous event.
Before the PC market returns to a normal situation, we will find data worse than before COVID-19. A few weeks ago it was reported that the sale of graphics cards registered the worst data than 2010. There are two factors here, the drop in sales and the absurd prices of these components.
Really, brands have made a lot of money for an unexpected situation. In 2024, a normalization of computer sales is expected, even a rise. One of the reasons is that in 2024 the Windows 10 operating system will be discontinued by Microsoft.
Note that the Windows 12 operating system will be launched by 2024 or, at the latest, in 2025. It will come with new limitations and artificial restrictions seeking to force the user to update their computer.
