Official Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1: it will equip more than fifteen smartphones in 2022

Qualcomm has lifted the veil on two new premium SoCs: the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. This is the premium version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 which powers all high-end smartphones from the start of 2022. The founder promises a marked improvement in energy consumption and capture in 8K HDR. Fifteen brands have already announced that they want to use it. The first models are expected in the third quarter of 2022.

We have seen it in recent months, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is not the steamroller we expected. The performance of Qualcomm’s high-end SoC is certainly better than that of the Snapdragon 888+, especially at the graphics level. But this is not the main advantage of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It is to have better heat management. It is engraved in 4 nm, against 5 nm for its predecessor. It therefore heats up less for the same task. And that is very good news.

We have seen this with all the smartphones we have tested under Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, whether it is the Find X5 Pro, the Xiaomi 12, the OnePlus 10 Pro, the Realme GT 2 Pro or the Motorola Edge 30 Pro. With the Honor Magic4 Pro and the Xiaomi 12 Pro, we saw a slightly different handling of overheating. But, it remains much more moderate than with terminals under Snapdragon 888 (in particular the Mi 11), even if recent smartphones, like the Find X5 are not subject to the same concern. We therefore believe that Qualcomm engineers have therefore worked on heating and optimization.

The official Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1: it is a little faster and above all less greedy

And that’s what we’re still seeing today with the launch of Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (the name Qualcomm preferred to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+). Unsurprisingly, this SoC was made official today, Friday May 20, 2022. And it takes many elements from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, while offering some additional optimizations. We are thinking in particular of the Kryo core, the frequencies of which increase to 2 GHz for the Silver cores (the least efficient), 2.5 GHz for the Gold cores and… 3.2 GHz for the Prime core. This is the first time the Prime heart has risen so high.

The frequency of the Adreno 720 GPU does the same: it goes from 818 MHz to 900 MHz. Qualcomm promises a 10% increase in SoC performance compared to its predecessor, but above all a 30% drop in energy consumption on the same tasks. Whether on the CPU or the GPU. And that is very good (if this is confirmed). For the rest, very few changes are to be expected. We notice the arrival of Bluetooth 5.3, the new wireless connection standard. And neural processors are offered 20% more power for artificial intelligence.

About fifteen brands will offer a smartphone under Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in 2022

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 should therefore offer better stability and better energy efficiency. Many smartphone manufacturers have already signed up with Qualcomm to use this SoC in their future flagships. More than fifteen brands are mentioned in the press release. Here is the complete list:

  • Asus ROG
  • Black Shark
  • Honor
  • Iqoo (a premium brand owned by Vivo)
  • Lenovo
  • Motorola (separate from Lenovo for geographical reasons)
  • Nubia
  • OnePlus (with the OnePlus 10 Ultra)
  • Oppo
  • OSOM (the brand launched by a former member of Essential Products)
  • realme
  • RedMagic (Nubia’s gaming brand)
  • Redmi (the alternative brand of Xiaomi)
  • live
  • Xiaomi
  • ZTE

In this list, Samsung is missing, while a certain Galaxy Z Flip 4 would be equipped with it. Still according to Qualcomm, all its brands will launch a smartphone under Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the course of 2022. And the first models should even be available during the third trimester. Either between July and September 2022. This promises a return to the starting blocks!
