Oppo pushes the limits of fast charging with its 150 W and 240 W chargers

At MWC 2022, Oppo has just made an impression in terms of fast charging technology. The firm unveils a 150 W charging solution… and breaks a record with its 240 W charger.

Charging our smartphone is one of the elements that has evolved the most in recent years. Faster or wireless, it comes in different forms and manufacturers regularly push the limits. Chinese brands are in a real race and Oppo has just taken a step ahead of its main competitors. At Mobile World Congress 2022, the manufacturer confirms that there is now a margin between fast charging… and fast charging. With the exception of the Xiaomi 11T Pro and its 120W lightning charge, most smartphones have sub-100W charging technology. An already comfortable situation, as evidenced by the results obtained with the Oppo Find X5 Pro and its 80 W wired charging.

Nevertheless, Oppo wants to go far and has just presented a 240 W SuperVOOC charger (24 V for 10 A). An impressive speed that allows, with video support, to charge a smartphone equipped with a 4,500 mAh battery in just 9 minutes. It only takes 3.5 minutes to reach the 50% mark. Impressive results which constitute a new record; avowed goal of this feat achieved by the brand. Oppo assures that it does not, for the moment, intend to market such a fast charger.

Such charging power raises the question about battery health and safety. The Chinese manufacturer is reassuring and indicates that it “minimizes potential hazards and risks”. Its 240 W SuperVOOC has three charge pumps and five protection measures; as well as a chip that controls voltage, current and temperature. Finally, this protection against the risk of overheating is reinforced by the presence of 13 sensors installed in the phone.

Oppo announces 150 W fast charging, soon on a OnePlus smartphone

If we still have to wait before discovering this 240 W charger, Oppo is close to offering a 150 W charger. Like Realme, the manufacturer achieves this power by relying on its SuperVOOC technology. Already used in the brand’s smartphones, it is evolving to deliver 150 W (20 V for 7.5 W) and charge a 4,500 mAh battery from 1 to 50% in just 5 minutes. Allow 15 minutes to reach 100% charge.

A great performance for the brand which demonstrates its mastery of technology. Oppo claims that its 150W charging technology does not deteriorate the battery any faster. The latter would retain 80% of its capacity after 1,600 charging cycles; against 800 charge cycles for most smartphones on the market, according to Oppo.

Another interesting element, the adapter uses gallium nitride (GaN) to maintain a relatively compact size. The 150 W charger has almost the same dimensions as the 65 W SuperVOOC adapter, namely 58 x 57 x 30 mm and a weight of approximately 172 grams.

Presented at MWC 2020, the 150 W charging technology will first appear under the OnePlus brand. A first model will be released during the second quarter, between April and May 2022.
