Orange, Bouygues Telecom, SFR: here’s why the prices of mobile plans keep rising

For several months now, the prices of mobile and internet packages from different operators have been constantly increasing. A surprise that customers would do without, who sometimes discover with amazement the amount of their bill. ISPs justify these regular price increases to cope with the ever-increasing investments for the deployment of optical fiber and 5G.

3.2% in just one year, this is the average increase in the price of mobile plans from the main operators in France. For several years now, Orange, Bouygues Telecom, Free and SFR have regularly increased the prices of their mobile and Internet offers.

Most of the time, these increases are made on the sly, and it is not uncommon for users to notice it once in front of their monthly bill. Very often, operators justify these new prices by inflating your mobile data envelope. This is for example the case of Orange which increased the prices of its 1st price offer, in exchange for 4 GB of data instead of 100 MB. Recently, it was the turn of Bouygues Telecom, which revised upwards all the prices of its Fiber offers, on the occasion of the support of Wi-Fi 6E on its compatible boxes.

Necessary price increases for operators

For their part, the operators fully assume these regular increases, necessary according to them to offset fiber optic deployment costs and 5G, but also to support network maintenance. “Mobile internet consumption is increasing by 40% per year. This requires adapting the networks and therefore the investments”, explains the press service of Orange to our colleagues from BFM TV.

Despite everything, Orange wants to be reassuring and promises a return “at a fair price”stating that a “market that breaks prices is not sustainable”. However, it should be remembered that France is one of the best-off countries regarding the price of mobile plans. If the average price of a pass is around €13 in Franceit is significantly higher in Germany (€47) or even in the United States, with an average price set at €63 per month.

If you are looking to lower the bill, the best is still to go and see the competition regularly, since the operators regularly have welcome offers for new customers. Note that Free recently pledged not to increase the prices of its mobile plans until 2027. A well-placed tackle against other ISPs who have multiplied price increases in recent years.
