Perplexity AI, or how to improve and extend the reach of ChatGPT

Since the popularization of ChatGPT, we have seen a multitude of proposals appear that, as Perplexity AI does, They intend to provide an extra layer on top of the OpenAI chatbot, that improves what it can offer us, either by enriching its output in some way, or by extending its reach to web pages, browsers, documents, etc. Among them, as usually happens in these cases, we find some very interesting solutions, others that are embarrassing, and many that fall somewhere between the two extremes.

Thus, as a person interested in artificial intelligence and the emergence of services based on it that we are experiencing in recent months, I spend a lot of time looking for and testing new proposals in this field. I have already said on many occasions that the new Bing, even with its flaws, seems to me to be one of the best implementations of a chatbot I have ever seen, and the proposal to bring together several AIs in a single app, as Poe does, also seems to me a great proposal.

This constant exploration of new proposals based on artificial intelligence has led me to meet this morning with Perplexity AI, a service based on ChatGPT but improving on it and extending its reach in various ways. I’ve been testing it all day, as it wouldn’t be correct to recommend something without barely knowing it. Now, after several hours of using it in different ways, I have come to the conclusion that, at least in its current state, it is highly recommended.

The first thing I liked about Perplexity AI is that It is accessible through its website, but it also has an app for iOS and an extension for Google Chrome. In all three cases, web, app and extension, its interface is quite simple, so in less than a minute you will have been able to start using it. This may sound silly, but I’ve already come across a service that seemed to want to emulate the control panel of a spaceship.

Another aspect that I liked, and a lot, is that at least for now no user account required. Yes, unlike the rest of the notable proposals in this field, Perplexity AI does not ask you to register and, therefore, you do not have to provide personal data. Of course, this will have made you deduce the next point, and that is that we are talking about a service (again I have to make the apostille that it is so, at least for now) totally free.

The connection to the Internet and the identification of the sources is, in my opinion, a must for you to be able to trust an AI-based chatbot. Hallucinations from generative models are a problem, and not having a way to verify the information provided by artificial intelligence means that all its outputs must be questioned. Well, just like Bing, Perplexity AI is also connected to the Internet and therefore obtains up-to-date information and identifies sources used for each answer.

Both the web interface and the iOS app (hopefully the Android version won’t take too long) work similar to any other chatbot. We have a text box in which to write our query (we can formulate it in Spanish even though the web and the app are in English, and we will obtain the answer in our language) and, after sending it, we will obtain a response, under which links to the sources used.

The extension for Chrome, however, presents a different proposal, more adapted to the context. After installing it, clicking on its icon will show a box in which we can enter our query, but in this case we also have a selector that allows us to choose if said question is limited to the web page that we have open, to the entire domain of the same, or if it is a question of a general naturethat is, not linked to the page that we have open.

In addition, it also integrates one of the functions that have become most popular in recent times, that of summarizing the content of the web page that we have open at that moment. For this purpose, we will only have to click on the Summarize button that is shown in the upper right corner and, in a matter of seconds, we will obtain a summary (in English, yes, even if the summarized page is in another language) of the content Of the same. At this point, I must say that I have tested it on several sites and with all types of content, and the result has always been quite accurate.

As I said, for now this is a first impression, but if it maintains all the good things of its current conditions, and also evolves to improve, Perplexity AI deserves to be highlighted as one of the most interesting and recommendable chatbots of the moment.
