With the official release of the Peugeot e-308, the Stellantis group also took the opportunity to present a new EMP2 electric motor co-developed with the Japanese company Nidec. And precisely, we will now find this engine / battery assembly on the Citroën DS3 and Peugeot e-208. On the program, more power and greater autonomy.

On September 13, 2022, the Stellantis group lifted the veil on the new Peugeot e-308. Offered in station wagon and saloon versions, this car features a new engine block called EMP2 and manufactured by Emotors, a company co-founded by PSA and the Japanese Nidec.

This architecture will replace the current CMP, used in the electric cars of the group’s manufacturers (Citroën, Peugeot, Opel, etc.). And precisely, we have just learned that this new engine/battery assembly will now equip the next Peugeot e-208 and Citroën DS3. Of course, adopting EMP2 means more power and better range for these vehicles.

A new architecture inherited from the e-308

Thus and concerning the e-208, it will now display a power of 115 kW instead of 100 kW, i.e. from 136 hp to 156 hp. Maximum torque increases to 260 Nm. This is an overall increase of engine power by 15%. There’s something new on the battery side too.

Indeed, the electric city car will benefit from a new battery operating under 400V. Raw capacity increased from 50 to 51 kWh. But it is on the useful capacity that the increase is substantial, thus going from 46.2 kWh to 48.1 kWh. In fact, autonomy swells to reach, according to the words of the Lion brand, the 400 km. Note that recent rumors suggested the arrival of an e-208 with 400 km of autonomy. They were right.

In addition, the manufacturer also announces lower consumption, namely 12 kWh per 100 km. Regarding charging, no change to report. We remain at 7.4 kW as standard and up to 11 kW as an option. As for fast direct current charging, we can go up to 100 kW. In other words, this allows you to go from 20% to 80% autonomy in less than 25 minutes. According to Peugeot, this new version of the e-208 will be available in the course of 2023.

The DS 3 also benefits from a redesign

Unsurprisingly, the Citroën DS3 will also benefit from this new architecture. Indeed, the chevron brand announced this Monday, September 26, 2022 the redesign of the urban crossover. First of all, this DS3 2.0 welcomes some aesthetic changes, such as a new shield, a new grille and new LED headlights at the front. New 18″ rims for the electric version are also planned.

On the mechanical side, this DS 3 e-Tense (its new little name) will therefore benefit from the engine/battery unit of Emotors. The power then goes to 115kW like on the Peugeot e-208. Nevertheless, the battery will have a capacity greater than that of the city car, namely 54 kWh. Autonomy will therefore increase significantly from 341 km to 402 km in the WLTP mixed cycle.

As for recharging, we stay on 100 kW in direct current (20% to 80% in 25 minutes) and 11 kW in alternating current (0 to 100% in 5 hours). Citroën announces a consumption of 12.6 kWh per 100 km. Pre-orders for this new DS 3 are open from September 27, 2022, for a fixed price from €41,700. And yes inevitably, the prices increase, the DS 3 Crossback being displayed until then at 39,300 €.
