Pixel 6a: Google confirms that the smartphone uses a new fingerprint sensor

Shortly after the release of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro late last year, smartphone owners complained a lot about the performance of the fingerprint sensor, which was often considered too slow. The devices then faced many bugsincluding one that blocked the scanner if the battery was completely discharged, and another that made it impossible to use the calibration tool.

Google had finally corrected the situation with an update several months after the launch. To avoid facing the same problems, the American manufacturer has confirmed that its new affordable smartphone that it launched at Google I/O 2022, the Pixel 6a, will indeed use a new fingerprint sensor. .

Pixel 6a’s fingerprint sensor should be faster than Pixel 6’s

According to Rick Osterloh, senior vice president of devices and services at Google, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6a fingerprint sensors are very different. Google did not provide further details on this, but it is expected that the American manufacturer has opted for a better quality componentwhich could allow users to unlock their smartphone even faster.

Unfortunately, it would still be an optical sensor, cheaper, rather than an ultrasonic sensor which can be found on premium smartphones such as the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The advantages of ultrasonic fingerprint scanners are their security, but above all their reliability. It is for example possible to unlock their device even when their finger is dirty or wet.

Anyway, we will still have to wait a while before we can check for ourselves if this new fingerprint sensor is really different. The Google Pixel 6a will only arrive on July 21 for pre-order at a price of 459 euros, almost 100 euros more than its predecessor, the Pixel 4a.
