WhatsApp is the best-known messenger service, alongside Signal and Telegram. It can be used to send text messages, photos, videos, and files. However, this can become confusing if used frequently: We then spend a long time searching for essential messages, scrolling until we find the right contact, or writing unformatted texts that are unclear to readers.
With simple WhatsApp tricks, you can adapt the app to your needs and customize texts, contacts, and messages.
Formatting text: 3 WhatsApp tricks
Format your text to create personalized WhatsApp messages. You can format the text to make WhatsApp messages more appealing or to highlight parts of them. It’s that simple:
Write in bold: Put an asterisk before and after a word. It will look like this: example.
Writing in italics: Place an underscore before and after a word to italicize it. This is how it will appear in your text: example
Cross out: Sometimes, you should cross out a word. You can embed the desired word between two tilde characters to do this. It looks like this: ~example~.
Note: What initially looks like an unsightly combination of memorable characters and words in your typed message will appear as formatted text in the chat after you send it.
Personalize chats: 2 practical tips
Another practical WhatsApp trick is to mark contacts and messages that are particularly important to you. Whether at work or in your free time, it’s helpful to have your most frequently used contacts quickly to hand. Because there are usually people, we write to particularly often. These can be parents, friends, partners, or work colleagues.
We can also refer back to critical messages later without searching for them. But how do you find them in the jungle of messages?
These two WhatsApp tricks will help you organize your contacts and messages clearly:
Pin chats: Pinning chats means they are always at the top of your chat list, even if it’s been a while since the last message. This means you can always keep an eye on your close contacts. To pin a chat, open the overview and swipe the desired chat to the right (iPhone) or press and hold it (Android). Then select the “Pin” option. Fixed contacts are marked with the pin symbol. You can also undo the process with the same movement.
Mark messages: Whether photos, links, addresses or kind words, you want to find some messages quickly. To do this, you can mark them with a star and add them to your favorites. You can do this by holding the desired message and tapping the star. You can find the marked messages in the respective chat overview under the category “Starred”.
Create a poll with WhatsApp.
Surveys in the chat can make it easier to make appointments with your friends. You may know this scenario: You want to plan your next date with your friends. There’s a flurry of messages in your WhatsApp group to find a date. Did you know that you can create a poll in every group? This WhatsApp trick makes the whole thing much quicker and less complicated.
This is how it works:
Open the Whatsapp group and click on the paperclip/plus symbol.
Click on “Poll”.
You can now type in a question and enter several possible answers.
When finished, click on the arrow symbol at the bottom right.
The poll will be posted in the chat, and all group participants will be able to vote. You can view the votes cast at any time.
Share location as a WhatsApp trick
You can share your location if you want to find someone in a large crowd. You can share your location with people via WhatsApp. This makes it easier for you to see each other at an event with many people, for example. To use this WhatsApp trick, you must allow WhatsApp to use your location.
This is how it works:
Click on the paperclip / plus symbol in the desired chat.
Select “Location”.
Now, you can share your current location or your live location.
If you click on “Send current location,” WhatsApp will link GoogleMaps to your current location. However, this will not be updated as soon as you move.
If you click “Share live location” instead, WhatsApp will send your location for a desired time frame, which will be continuously updated. This means that if you move, the other person will be notified.
You can share your live location for 15 minutes, one hour, or eight hours. However, your GPS signal must be switched on during this time. To end the live location prematurely, you can also click on “End sharing.”
Sharing your live location can also be an alternative for a more pleasant way home. For example, if you have to walk home alone at night and share your live location with someone you trust, this may give you a feeling of greater security.
