Privacy failure in Twitter circles

That of Twitter circles has been one of the most interesting features of the recently arrived to the social network. Its public tests began in May of last year and three months later, in August, its deployment to all users was completed. It is, as I already mentioned at the time, a function clearly inspired by Facebook, more specifically in the possibility of limiting the reach of our publications on said social network, something that provides a certain level of privacy and, therefore, stimulates the confident use of said service.

I know that talking about Facebook and privacy in the same sentence can give rise to humorous comments, so I will clarify that the only way to guarantee our privacy in the Zuckerberg network is simply not to be in it. However, it does provide (or at least tries to) Greater control over who can see our postssomething that Twitter lacked (except for accounts with a lock, of course) until the launch of the circles.

In case you’re not familiar with this feature, this is how the service itself describes it:

«Twitter Circle is a way to send tweets to selected people and share your thoughts with a smaller crowd. You choose who is in your Twitter Circle, and only the people you’ve added can reply to and interact with the Tweets you share in the Circle.»

What has been said, like the posts on our Facebook wall, although with some differencessince it is not necessary for a person to follow us so that we can include them in our circle, and there is also a limit of 150 people per circle.

Privacy failure in Twitter circles

In theory everything is great but, as we can read in TechCrunch, a security flaw has caused tweets posted to circles to be publicly visible. This problem is added to others already identified previously, such as the one that allows a user to see another’s posts even though the latter has blocked them, or posts from circles that are not identified as such, although they do maintain their scope limitations.

Since Elon Musk took control, Twitter seems to live in a permanent fire, and the massive layoffs carried out by the billionaire do not help at all to make it possible to respond quickly to this type of problem. Therefore, if you have ever published a tweet that you only wanted to reach certain people, those in your circle, My recommendation is that you delete them immediatelybecause they can end up exposed to the entire social network.
