PS3 games on the PS5 store?

Some gamers have noticed a few PS3 games coming to the PS5 PlayStation Store. Coincidence, error, or clue to backward compatibility?

For the past few days, the backward compatibility of PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on the new generation of consoles has been the subject of all the debates. Indeed, some clues suggest that Sony is preparing the return of legendary games on PS5 via a new service called Spartacus. Rumors about it are being revived today as some players have made an intriguing discovery.

Recently, PS3 games have magically reappeared on the PS5 store, with the mention of a price, and the possibility of putting them in your wishlist. Before that, the display of these games was however very different. It was simply possible to access it via the PlayStation Now service, with the mention Included, followed by the logo of the service, instead of the current price tag.

“Um, I don’t want to freak anyone out but a PS3 game isn’t supposed to have a price tag when looking for it on a PS5. Unless… “

Not all PS5 players are affected by this store update, so it’s still possible that this display is just an error in the matrix, which could be fixed by Sony. However, it could also be a test, gradually rolled out around the world, which could prepare players for the possibility of buying PS3 games in the same way as newer games, and play through full backwards compatibility.

The puzzle pieces are starting to fit together

It is when we put together the various indices of recent days that we come to this conclusion. Indeed, an Internet user had managed to find a patent concerning backward compatibility which left little room for doubt. In addition, we know that Sony is currently working on its competitor to Xbox Game Pass, that it is expected for the spring, and that it should give players the opportunity to access older titles via backward compatibility.

As for its operation, it should take over the basis of PlayStation Now, and even replace it. This was ‘confirmed’ last week, when UK retailers were forced to withdraw PlayStation Now prepaid cards from their stores by January 19. It therefore seems that Sony is preparing well for the arrival of its next service, which has still not been formalized by the firm. However, it shouldn’t take long.
