The Purism Lapdock Kit is a solution that allows you to convert, easily and without having to go into complicated configurations, a smartphone with the PureOS operating system on a linux based laptop. It is a very interesting option that greatly expands the possibilities of the Purism Librem 5 smartphone.
Taking a look at the contents of the Purism Lapdock Kit we find a dock NexDock 360, a magnetized mount to hold the smartphone right next to the dock and a USB Cable Type-C which is what allows us to easily connect the smartphone to the dock without having to resort to any additional wiring.
Although the NexDock 360 looks like a traditional laptop, the truth is that it does not have any hardware or software, which means that it is totally dependent on the smartphone to function. What this dock does include is a 13.3-inch touchscreen with IPS panel and 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolutionit has a hinge that can rotate 360 degrees, so it offers the value of a convertible, has a 44 Wh battery, four speakers, backlit keyboard, touchpad and comes with a very complete range of ports:
- 1 x USB 3.1 Type-C.
- 1 x Mini HDMI 1.4a.
- 1 x USB Type-C for charging.
- 1 x USB 3.0 Type-C for data.
- 1 x 3.5mm jack for sound.
- 1 x microSDXC.
When we connect the Purism Librem 5 we can work with the same applications that we have on our smartphone, and these will automatically fit the larger screen, so we won’t have to worry about anything, since the integration is complete. Some applications, in fact, can show additional columns and additional buttons and icons to take better advantage of that screen.
The price of this kit is 339 dollars, a reasonable figure considering the potential it offers, although for a little more we could buy a pretty decent laptop outright.
