QNAP launches two new 10G switches, meet the QSW-M3216R-8S8T and QSW-3216R-8S8T

QNAP has presented two new high-end switches with 10G ports, the main feature of these new switches is that they have a size of half the rack width, this means that we can place two switches in the same U within a rack, saving a large amount of space, especially if you have two computers that have this functionality, since we can only occupy 1U and not 2U as is usual. Do you want to know the new features of the QSW-M3216R-8S8T and QSW-3216R-8S8T?

QNAP is not only a leader in the world of storage with its NAS servers, both for homes and for small and medium-sized businesses. For some time now, they have also focused on the development of solutions for networks such as professional routers, manageable and unmanageable switches with a very good price, as well as network cards with the 10G standard and much more. Today, the manufacturer launches two new models that are really interesting, especially for very intensive users of the local network who need 10G connectivity.

Features of the QSW-M3216R-8S8T switch

This new switch is a manageable device, therefore, we have a complete configuration firmware to adapt it to our needs. The firmware incorporated in this switch is exactly the same as always, with the same L2 functionalities that we already know. This QSW-M3216R-8S8T has the following ports:

  • 8 10GBASE-T Multigigabit portswith RJ-45 connector as usual.
  • 8 SFP+ ports at 10Gbpsso we will need to use a compatible transceiver or DAC cable.
  • An out-of-band management port that is Gigabit Ethernet.

This manageable switch has a capacity of 320Gbps switchingwith a 160Gbps non-blocking capacity. It allows us to manage a table of up to 16K MAC entries and also supports Jumbo Frames at 9K of length. The dimensions of this switch are 43.3mm high, 207mm wide and 199.5mm deep, with a net weight of 1.52Kg. To operate, it requires a power of up to 80W, so if we use all the ports intensively, we will have quite high consumption, which is normal since we are dealing with 10G electronics.

As for the firmware functionalities, is the main difference with respect to the QSW-3216R-8S8T model, which is not manageable. This model allows us to manage all ports in an advanced way, configure VLANs on the different ports, we have Link Aggregation, we also have RSTP to avoid loops at the link layer level, we have LLDP, IGMP Snooping and also ACL (Control Lists Access) and QoS.

Features of the QSW-3216R-8S8T switch

This switch is exactly the same as the previous one in terms of hardware characteristics, however, it is not a manageable model. Therefore, we cannot perform advanced configurations with VLANs, Link Aggregation, ACL or QoS that we do have in the previous model. The hardware characteristics of this model are the following:

  • 8 10GBASE-T Multigigabit ports.
  • 8 SFP+ ports at 10Gbps.

This model also has a 320Gbps switching capacitya 160Gbps non-blocking capacityand allows us to manage a MAC table up to 16K and Jumbo Frames at 9K of length. The dimensions of this switch are exactly the same as the previous one, and so is the weight. In addition, the electrical power it needs is also exactly the same as the manageable model, there is no difference.

As you can see, these two new half-width rack switches will allow us to place two switches with different characteristics in the same U without any problem, in this way, if we need a manageable switch in one part of the network we can buy the first one. of them, and if we need a non-manageable switch in another part of the network, we can buy the second one and thus save a lot of money.
