QNAP TS-x62, much more than NAS

When talking about NAS devices, like these QNAP TS-x62 (262 and 462), many people tend to think of them exclusively as network storage devices. And it is logical, of course, since NAS are nothing more than the acronym for Network Attached Storage, storage connected to the network, that is, a storage unit connected to a network and that has the necessary software to allow remote access to it, either on the local network or directly via the Internet.

However, with the evolution of these devices and their operating systems, their versatility has grown exponentially. They still provide online storage support, of course, but they can also serve as servers for all kinds of purposes: from serving multimedia content to managing backups, managing file downloads and even providing us with personal cloud services, wherever we are. To this end, NAS must combine storage capacity, processing capacity and maximum speed connectivity.

A clear example of this can be found in the QNAP TS-x62 series, which has just been presented by the company, and which consists of the TS-262 and TS-462 models, both equipped with processors Intel Celeron N4505 2.9 gigahertz dual core, an integrated that supports the multitude of functions that can be developed, and that is complemented by the four gigabytes of RAM that we will find in the TST-262 and the two, expandable up to 16, that the TS-462 integrates. In both cases, we can further improve its performance thanks to its two PCIe M.2 slots for SSD cache and its PCIe Gen 3 slot that allows users to expand the NAS functionalities with various QNAP PCIe cards.

In terms of speed, the QNAP TS-x62 have a network port 2.5GbE (which, yes, requires CAT5e cables to get the most out of it), so we are talking about NAS capable of serving video in 4K resolutions without bandwidth problems. But for those who want to use it mainly to play video, they can also connect it directly to the television, since it also has one HDMI 2.1 port.

The main difference between the two models is found in the number of bays for mounting the disks. In the TST-262 we will find two bays, while the TST-462 allows the mounting of four units. In both cases, the maximum speed supported is 6Gb/s, they allow the mounting of 2.5 and 3.5-inch SATA drives, 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, and supports Hot Swapping.

The QNAP TS-x62 NAS are already on sale in Spain and you can find them in the usual network of distributors. In the case of PcComponentes, in addition, they currently enjoy interesting discounts. In the case of the TS-262, its usual price is 645.23 euros, but now it has a 14% discount, so you can buy it for only 551.48 euros. And with regard to the TS-462, its normal price is 726.59 euros, but currently it has a 9% discount, which reduces it to 654.58 euro.
