Raspberry Pi 5 aims to see the light in 2024 due to supply problems

Raspberry Pi It has become the world’s best-known ARM architecture mini-PC. Despite the fact that it was initially created with a focus on the educational sector, the possibilities offered by some models have extended their use in areas such as IoT, multimedia centers, retrogaming machines, servers, industrial sectors and have even been used as the basis for Oracle to build a supercomputer. However, and despite the success, everything seems to indicate that Raspberry Pi 5 would begin to be commercialized, at the earliest, in the year 2024so in 2023 we will not see new models at least within that line.

It was Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi, who broke the news about the Raspberry Pi 5 in an interview with Christopher Barnatt, the person behind the ExplainingComputers YouTube channel. Apparently from the company responsible for the mini-PC they hope that 2023 will serve to recover from the shortage of chips and at least mitigate the supply problems that have occurred since the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, seeing the convulsive panorama in which we live, it is likely that another crisis, the one caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, will end up generating other problems.

Upton has explained that it would be a disaster if they launch the Raspberry Pi 5 in 2023 and production could not increase adequately due to some restriction or the fact that it cannibalizes something within the supply chain. Another situation that could occur is that the Raspberry Pi 5 affects the recovery of older models that are still in high demand. The manager has said that he hopes that the situation begins to improve from the second half of the year 2023, dates in which the obstacles should begin to decrease and therefore the ground would be paved for the launch of the Raspberry Pi 5 in 2024.

The decision made by the managers will make the gap between Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 the largest seen between two generations of the well-known mini-PC. However, it is good to see that it is difficult to find units of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, so that in this way they save having to respond to a demand and expectations that they cannot meet at the moment.
