Realme achieved record growth in the third quarter of 2021 to become the world’s fastest growing 5G smartphone maker, according to new research from analyst firm Counterpoint. The company experienced year-over-year (YoY) growth of 831% Sales during those three months. This is much more than other manufacturers such as OPPO, second, which records only an annual growth of 165%.

Vivo, Xiaomi and Samsung are also lagging behind, with respective growths of only 147%, 134% and 70%. To achieve such a feat, Realme has essentially flooded the market with 5G phones in 2021. Since the start of the year, the company has launched dozens of 5G-compatible smartphones at increasingly affordable prices.

Realme is experiencing tremendous growth in certain markets

The growth of Realme is partly due to the popularity of the smartphone maker in certain markets such as India. Indeed, sales of Realme 5G devices increased by 9519% per year in India, a country where 5G technology is not even deployed yet. According to the local Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT), 5G telecommunications services are expected to be rolled out in some cities in India in 2022. Manufacturers are therefore expected to experience even more impressive growth next year. As a reminder, in Europe, Realme had experienced growth in its smartphone sales of 160% in the third quarter of 2021.

5G as a technology has entered the market much faster than its predecessor. As 5G technology continues to evolve, we are entering the next phase of growth supported by the maturation and expansion of device portfolios. In addition, companies have also actively pushed 5G smartphones due to the better availability of 5G components. Said Tarun Pathak, analyst at Counterpoint.

If Realme continues to experience such significant growth in the following years, the manufacturer could well worry other major players in the market such as Samsung and Xiaomi, which had become number 1 in sales of smartphones in the world last summer.
