Rocketeer: Disney + announces sequel starring David Oyelowo

Exactly 30 years after the release of the first adaptation of Rocketeer in theaters (a real flop at the box office), Disney has announced the arrival of a sequel in live action entitled The Return of the Rocketeer.

Disney announces the arrival of the Rocketeer sequel to Disney +

David and Jessica Oyelowo will be producers of the new film, a revival that has been in the works for some time but which, originally, should have been called Rocketeers and had a black female character as the protagonist. About the film, announced again in 2016, nothing has been heard and now we assume that it has been transformed into this new project.

It also appears that David Oyelowo (Selma) will act in the film in the role of the protagonist, while the film will be written by the screenwriter of Now You See Me, Ed Ricourt. Brigham Taylor (Tron: Legacy, The Jungle Book) will produce the film together with Yoruba Saxon.

As reported by Deadline, The Return of the Rocketeer will have “A new creative direction, with Ricourt’s story centered around a retired Tuskegee aviator taking on the role of Rocketeer”.

The original 1991 film was directed by Joe Johnston and adapted the graphic novel of the same name by Dave Stevens; whose new adventures were published in Italy not too long ago by saldaPress.

In that first film, a young pilot stumbled upon a jetpack prototype that allowed him to become a masked “high-flying” hero. All this putting him in trouble with the Nazis, the Mafia and the FBI (yes, there are a bit of all of them). If you haven’t seen the original movie yet, you can of course retrieve it on Disney +.

We now also know why a surprise board game from Rocketeer was announced last week (The Rocketeer: Fate of the Future).
