Ryzen 7000: the new AM5 socket would only be compatible with DDR5 RAM

The arrival of the next generation of Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 “Raphael” processors is fast approaching, and with it, a new AM5 socket. The latter might only be compatible with DDR5 RAM.

AMD AM5

According to a new report from Tom’s Hardware, the next X670 and B650 motherboards with socket AM4 will not be not compatible with older generation DDR4 RAM. The Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 “Raphael” will therefore exclusively support DDR5 RAM, which is more expensive, but also more complicated to find on the market.

This report was corroborated by ComputerBase, which posted a guide to the AM5 socket on its forum. The 254-page document mentions the term “DDR5” 76 times, while the term “DDR4” is absent. So this is good news from a performance point of view, since the current AM4 socket is not compatible with the DDR5 standard, but it is very bad news for your wallet.

PCs with AMD processors may cost more

Given the high prices of DDR5 memory, AMD’s choice to only support DDR5 could prove a disadvantage against Intel’s Raptor Lake, which will continue to support both affordable DDR4 memory and expensive DDR5 memory, leaving players the choice whether or not to spend more for better performance. The abandonment of DDR4 on the AM4 socket could also be a big step towards the end of the production of DDR4 RAM to leave the field open to the next generation.

AMD is said to have already started production of the Ryzen 7000 series chips and, barring major issues, we expect them to arrive between the end of August and October, which is around a year after the launch. arrival from Alder Lake. Before the official launch, it is known that the three most powerful processors, the Ryzen 9 7900, Ryzen 9 7900X, and Ryzen 9 7950X will have 65W, 105W, and 170W TDPsrespectively.

AMD has also already announced that all socket AM4 cooling solutions will be compatible with the new generation of motherboards. You will therefore not have to change your cooler or your watercooling if you already have a computer with a Ryzen processor. We will also find the new generation of PCI Express Gen 5which promises ever faster data transfers.
