The announcement by France Télévisions, TF1 and M6 of their intention to sell Salto, the French streaming service, did not surprise many people. Two years after its birth, the platform had still not found its audience, stuck as it was between American behemoths like Netflix, and owners who did not give themselves the means to succeed, for fear of competing with each other. , most likely. Canal+ had declared its interest in Salto. It is rumored that Molotov, the French service for the distribution of television channels via the Internet and Amazon are also considering buying the service.

If the three owners of Salto refused to use the term commercial failure when referring to the results of their joint venture, the figures do not lie: with only 900,000 subscribers and a gaping deficit of €180 million, Salto is not far from filing for bankruptcy. Furthermore, the shareholders of TF1 and M6 have already announced the disengagement of the two private channels. While Canal+ was until now the only potential buyer, now Molotov and Amazon are inviting themselves to the negotiating table.

Canal+ would like to take over Salto, but the takeover of OCS from Orange is the priority on the shopping list

France Télévisions is determined to sell Salto, but not at any price. Stéphane Sitbon-Gomez, the director of antennas and programs for France Télévisions, declared on BFM Business that it was time to seek stability: “we are going to look for a shareholder who believes in the Salto industrial project, we are ready to commit to sustainability, that is to say, to leaving our content for a certain period of time”. France Télévisions is seeking to finance its programming schedule for next year. He would miss 45 million €.

The expression of interest from Amazon and Molotov is a good sign for the future of Salto. On the one hand because Canal+ is already in negotiations with Orange to take over OCS, which means that the acquisition of Salto is not a priority in the eyes of the crypto chain, and on the other hand, because the American giant is already a commercial partner of the platform. Its almost unlimited budget is a guarantee of sustainability for the French platform.
