Salto is the new “made in France” streaming service. Created by France Television, M6 and TF1, it aims to compete with the streaming offers of American giants, such as Amazon Prime, Disney +, Apple TV + and especially Netflix. Launched on October 20, 2020, Salto costs 7 to 13 euros per month depending on the packages. And the catalog, very heterogeneous, combines programs, series, films and documentaries from France, but also from other countries, including the United States.
The subject of a French streaming offer has been mentioned in many discussions for many years. Faced with heavy American competition, led by Netflix and also including Amazon, Apple and Disney, and French resistance, led by OCS and Canal + Series, the three French media groups, TF1, France Télévisions and M6, wanted to deploy a credible alternative and adapted to the French. Her name is Salto.
Salto is therefore a streaming platform that will be added to all the offers mentioned above. According to its three shareholders, Salto will complement the existing offering, providing content that you won’t find anywhere else. What will its catalog consist of? What is the launch date of the service? What screens are compatible with this offer? And above all what will be the price to access it? We tell you everything in this complete file.
📅 When will Salto be available?
The official launch of Salto took place on October 20, 2020.
In the weeks since it went live, the first figures have been very encouraging as Salto has managed to quickly generate 100,000 registrations. But when, a year later, you put things in perspective, the performance is not really a performance anymore. Indeed, the platform is obviously struggling to convince the French. To date, it still has not exceeded one million subscribers.
💶 What is the price of the Salto subscription?
Salto is a streaming service whose economic model is similar to that of the competition: a monthly subscription with several levels to include several screens simultaneously. There are three subscription plans :
- The first formula Solo is offered to 6.99 euros per month. This amount offers the possibility of watching a Salto program on one screen at the same time.
- The second formula Duo is offered to 9.99 euros per month. At this price, you have the option of watching Salto videos on two screens at the same time. This means that another member of your family can watch one movie or series while you enjoy another.
- The third formula Tribe, for the whole family, is sold 12.99 euros per month. You have the possibility to watch Salto programs on four screens simultaneously.
Like other competitors, Salto offers the first month of viewing. You therefore have one month to familiarize yourself with the different themes of the Salto catalog, which is not limited to French fiction from TF1 or France 3.
Salto is positioned, at the tariff level, facing Canal + Séries and Netflix. Here are some prices from different competitors for comparison:
- A Netflix subscription costs 8, 12 or 16 euros per month. The first package includes 1 screen and SD definition. The second includes 2 screens simultaneously and HD definition. And the latest includes four screens simultaneously and Ultra HD definition.
- A Canal + Series subscription costs 7, 10 or 12 euros a month. The first level includes 1 screen, the second 2 simultaneous screens and the last 4 simultaneous screens.
- An OCS subscription costs 10 or 12 euros (or even slightly more through an operator). The first package includes 2 simultaneous screens and the second 4 screens.
- A Disney + subscription costs 7 euros per month. It includes 4K definition and up to 4 simultaneous screens.
- An Apple TV + subscription costs 5 euros per month. Some channels, like StarzPlay, are sold separately. Apple TV + also offers a rental service for movies and series. Membership is offered for one year to anyone who purchases an Apple device.
- Prime Video is included in the Amazon Prime subscription (with some contents are sold separately). This subscription costs 49 euros per year.
At first, there does not seem to be any options regarding the maximum definition of the video stream. At Netflix, access to 4K quality is exclusive to the last level of subscription, sold at 16 euros per month.

🎦 What can we watch on Salto?
Contrary to popular belief, the Salto catalog is not only made up of reruns of Louis la flea market, Plus belle vie or Joséphine ange garde. You will obviously find there all the colors of French fiction (cinema, soap opera, TV films, series, short programs).
Salto’s catalog consists of films, series, documentaries. He will be largely powered by all chains the three shareholders of Salto: TF1, TMC, TFX, TF1 Series & Films, LCI, France, France 3, France 4, France 5, France Ô, France Info, M6, W9 and 6Ter. Koh Lanta, The Best Pastry Chef, etc. There will also be programs for the youngest spectators, coming from Tfou Max, Gulli Max and Okoo.
Salto also offers content from other countries: the United States, of course, but also Spain, United Kingdom, Norway, Canada and even Switzerland.
Series side, certain seasons are offered upon arrival in full. Some examples: Downtown Abbey, Handmaid’sd Tale, Alex Hugo, Desperate Housewives, Candice Renoir, Parks & Recreation, Balthasar, Bates Motel, etc.
Other series are offered episode by episode, with a few days ahead of linear diffusion classic. This is the case with Plus belle la vie, Tomorrow belongs to us, Un si grand soleil, La Villa des Coeurs brisés. Season 4 of Captain Marleau will be available in preview.
Salto has also purchased the broadcasting rights to certain American and international series, such as The Manifest whose Season 3 episodes will be available 24 hours after airing in the United States. This will also be the case for season 5 of Bull, as well as season 4 of Fargo (season which will therefore be exclusive to Salto and which you will therefore not find on Netflix).
On the film side, the same observation: recent feature films and classics, French and international content. Thematic cycles will be put online every week so that there is something for everyone.
In addition, there is access in live and in replay to all the programs broadcast by the channels mentioned above. Salto announces that 10,000 hours programs are offered from launch, with a weekly enrichment of the catalog, on the same model as the competition.
📺 On which screens can you watch Salto?
Salto is compatible with a large number of platforms from its launch. You can watch programs from a dedicated application for the operating systems which will have one, or by default ofa web browser. This is the same model chosen by Apple, Netflix or Amazon.
A very large part of smartphones and tablets will have a native application offering a touch interface. Computers, Windows, macOS or Chromebook, must initially be satisfied with access through a browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge, etc.). PlayStation and Xbox game consoles do not have a native application to play Salto content.
Certain digital decoders, multimedia boxes and connected televisions are compatible with the service. A app for Android TV and Apple tvOS is available on application stores dedicated to these two operating systems. Apple TV, Nvidia’s Shield TV, Sony’s Android TV, are a few examples.
Internet Boxes, with a few exceptions, do not have native access to Salto at launch. At the time of writing, no rebroadcasting contract has been signed between Salto and the Internet service providers, Orange, Bouygues Telecom, Free and SFR. However, this situation is not set in stone. According to the daily Le Figaro, negotiations are said to be underway with some of them.

The minimum versions of these operating systems to take advantage of compatibility with the native Salto application have not yet been communicated.
