According to Korean media, Samsung Electronics has reportedly lowered its forecast for smartphone sales in 2023. The world’s leading manufacturer of smartphones takes note of a slowdown in economic activity that began this year. Even if its high-end devices are selling very well, and a boom is even expected for Christmas, the trend will apparently be more difficult to maintain at the beginning of the year 0223.

While the giant had initially set a target of 300 million units sold next year, its analysts deemed this figure far too optimistic and reduced it to 260 million, 10 million less than in 2022. The record of 320 million handsets sold in 2017 will not be beaten. Samsung has the small consolation of knowing that the entire industry is being hit hard by this sharp downturn: the repercussions of the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine will be felt lastingly.

At less than 300 million handsets, Samsung lowers its sales forecast for 2023

Like Apple, whose delivery of iPhone 14 could drop by 30% by the end of the year, Samsung has planned to bet on high-end smartphones to try to preserve its profits. While the success of the chaebol has so far relied on the variety and accessibility of its devices, priority will apparently be given to sales of high value-added devices, namely the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4 and other Galaxy S23.

The watchword at Samsung is now very clear: we will focus on profitability rather than a large volume of sales. What are the implications of such a policy for the consumer? It will be offered fewer low-end devices. Foldable devices, on the other hand, will continue to be perfected. Although more expensive, they will be more durable, therefore more interesting even for a public who initially would not have been interested in this type of product. mid-range smartphones, Samsung’s Galaxy A will still represent two-thirds of the manufacturer’s sales.
