Samsung’s ViewFinity S8 series of monitors adds Thunderbolt 4 connectivity

samsung has shown a new monitor model of its line ViewFinity S8 to add Thunderbolt 4 connectivity. More specifically, the model S8UT 27-inch has built two Thunderbolt 4 ports, so in theory it would now be possible to connect a second 4K screen without using a second video output.

Samsung showed last June the S80PB monitor, belonging to the aforementioned ViewFinity S8 series. Said model is available in 27-inch and 32-inch sizes, with both supporting native 4K resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, USB Type-C connectivity with up to 90-watt charging via USB Power Delivery, and is certified with Pantone Validated and Pantone SkinTone Validated.

For its part, the S8UT model of ViewFinity S8 is not that it represents a revolution compared to the others previously marketed, since, according to Samsung, it supports a native resolution of 3,840×2,160 pixelsa refresh rate of 60Hz, 5 millisecond response time, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, a maximum brightness of 350 nits and does not have the VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification that its predecessor does. All of that is coupled with a built-in sensor that can automatically adjust the monitor’s brightness based on ambient light conditions.

Despite the loss of VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification, ViewFinity S8 S8UT adds the aforementioned Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, retains predecessor’s 90-watt fast-charging capabilities and adds a secondary port capable of supplying 15-watts for a connected device. Because it has two ports, it offers different possibilities, such as powering a laptop or Thunderbolt accessories such as a secondary 4K monitor.

The ViewFinity S8 S8UT provides other interfaces such as Ethernet, one HDMI port, and three USB 3.0 Type-A connectors, so it can be said that it is capable of also performing hub functions. Samsung hasn’t published the price yet, but the product can be seen in the company’s store for Germany and the S80PB model is now for around 499 euros.

Obviously, the ViewFinity S8 S8UT (nor the ViewFinity S8 S80PB) is a monitor for gaming, but it is aimed at professionals looking for a screen with which to work comfortably.
