ScummVM, the retro emulator, celebrates its 20th anniversary with more games

20 years of ScummVM

Monkey Island ScummVM

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the creators of ScummVM have released version 2.5.0, which is nothing more than a nod to the improvements introduced in the form of compatibility. With the help of ResidualVM, the tool is now capable of running 2.5D games of the time, such as the famous Grim fandango, Myst 3: Exyle or The Longest Journey. The list of all included games that are now compatible with this new version is as follows:

  • Grim Fandango.
  • The Longest Journey.
  • Myst 3: Exile.
  • Little Big Adventure.
  • Red Comrades 1: Save the Galaxy.
  • Red Comrades 2: For the Great Justice.
  • Crimson Crown.
  • OO-Topos.
  • Glulx interactive fiction games.
  • Lure of the Temptress Konami release.
  • Private Eye.
  • Blue Force in spanish
  • Ringworld in spanish
  • Amazon: Guardians of Eden in Spanish
  • AGS Games versions 2.5+.
  • Nightlong: Union City Conspiracy.
  • The Journeyman Project 2: Buried in Time.
  • Crusader: No Remorse.
  • L-ZONE.
  • Spaceship Warlock

This new compatibility will allow you to play those games that a few years ago offered a new 2.5D perspective that almost managed to simulate a three-dimensional adventure with well-designed sprites and scenarios. The result is current compatibility with more than 64 different engines, something that was probably not in the initial plans of its creators, who insisted on making an application that could emulate Monkey Island 2. After that came Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis … and the rest is history.

How does it work?

ScummVM is a tool for modern platforms that is available for PC, Mac and dozens of devices such as phones, consoles and even for Raspberry Pi. All you need are the original game files, so if you have any of the classic jewels on a shelf at home, with this program you can run them wherever and however you want.

The new version has also taken advantage of to improve compatibility with high resolution displays (HiDPI), as well as the rewriting of much of the code of the Nintendo DS version, so the changes go beyond the simple addition of new ones. games. You can see all the news in the official change list.

Is it illegal to use this program?

As we have indicated previously, to play the games you need the original files, so the tool only takes care of executing them properly at the moment you specify the location of the files. Whether or not you have the games in your possession, the way to get them will be up to you. Of course, the retro market in Wallapop and second-hand platforms has exploded in recent years. Does anyone have an Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis to give away?
