Each year, the company Recommerce, one of the specialists in refurbished high-tech products, publishes its new scale on the second-hand mobile market. It must be said that for several years now, the second-hand and refurbished market is booming. Cheaper, more ecological and respectful of the environment, more and more French people are turning to second-hand devices.

More specifically, and according to the latest study by Recommerce and Kantar, 78% of respondents are more and more interested in reselling their smartphone to a refurbisher such as Recommerce or Back Market, with a view to paying less for their next smartphone. On the other hand, the French are less likely to act for ecological reasons (30%, down 7 points compared to the previous barometer). Still on resale, respondents are however cautious. In effect, only 27% of French people sold their smartphone in 2021. Several reasons motivate those who preferred to keep their old smartphone:

  • 35% want to keep it as a backup phone
  • 26% to give it to a loved one
  • 24% for fear of having their personal data stolen or hacked

37% of French people have already bought a second-hand smartphone

As for the purchase of used phones, the practice is gradually becoming more democratic. 37% of French people have already bought a second-hand smartphone from a professional or an individual, an increase of 11 points compared to 2020. And this trend is clearly on the rise among 16-34 year olds, with 44%. An astonishing figure especially since the addition of the Private Copy Commission on refurbished devices.

In 2021, we estimate that the European used smartphone market represents more than 5 billion euros. In France, the second-hand market weighs 1.2 billion euros, including 1 billion euros for reconditioned, which has increased by 15% in one year. In 2021, 17% of smartphones sold in France are refurbished phones, i.e. almost 1 in 5 phones sold for around 3 million units […] If the reflex to buy refurbished settles a little more every year among consumers, the market still has a good margin of progress in Europe and great challenges to take up to continue to inform, reassure, and thus democratize this mode of consumption. ”, assures Pierre-Étienne Roinat, president and co-founder of Recommerce.
