Self-service electric scooters could disappear from Paris on April 2, 2023

In her first interview since the presidential elections, Anne Hidalgo unveiled her plans for the coming months. Unsurprisingly, the mayor of Paris plans to continue its momentum regarding the regulation of electric scooters. On April 2, the inhabitants of the capital will be called upon to vote on the possible banning of self-service vehicles.

She had been discreet since her failure in the last presidential elections, Anne Hidalgo returns today with many projects for the capital. In an interview with our colleagues from Le Parisien, the socialist mayor returned to what awaits its inhabitants for 2023. In addition to preparing for the 2024 Olympics, another hot topic has occupied the municipality for a few months: self-service scooters.

Indeed, the latter have been in the sights of the town hall since the start of the school year, which hopes to be able to ban them during this year, describing them as dangerous for road users as well as for the environment. First measures have already been taken, such as banning them for minors in the capital. But Anne Hidalgo intends to go further.

Should self-service electric scooters be banned from Paris?

“It’s a bit of a mess. There is no street code, to say how we behave, and how the municipal police punish those who do not respect the rules”, recognizes the latter, which promises that the town hall is working on the subject. Also, Anne Hidalgo is preparing phase 2 of her counter-attack: a referendum for Parisians, which will take place on April 2.

These latter “will be called upon to go to the polling stations to answer a very simple question: do we continue or not with the self-service scooters? » A question “very divisive” according to the mayor, who also ensures that Parisians with their own electric scooter will not be affected by the measure – if there is a measure. This famous Street Code, meanwhile, should be presented during the month of June.
