SFR is champion of 4G deployment in April 2022, France exceeds 60,000 sites

Despite the arrival of 5G, operators continue to deploy their 4G offer on French territory. While there are now more than 60,000 branches in the country, it was SFR that won the prize in April with 105 additional sites during this period. It is closely followed by Orange and Free.

Although 5G now has over 3 million users in France, many have not subscribed to a plan for the new generation of telecoms, while others have not even had access to 4G yet. Also, the operators do not forget to continue to deploy the latter on the territory, even though the coverage slowly approaching 100%.

Thus, the ANFR continues each month to publish its report on the deployment of 4G in France. A symbolic milestone has just been exceeded in April: indeed, these are now more than 60,000 sites that equip the country. 57,023 are in metropolitan France, for 52,270 in service. In addition, SFR was the most prolific during this period with 105 new active sites in a month.

The deployment of 4G continues in France

The operator is therefore on the top step of the podium with a total of 23,176 sites in France. While Orange is ahead of it in this area with its 27,883 sites, it was less active in April with 93 new sites installed. He is slightly ahead of Free, who completes the podium with 91 new sites operational (21,863 in total). Bouygues is in last place with 79 new antennas for a total of 27,883 sites.

We necessarily notice a small drop in speed compared to the previous year, which is of course explained by the arrival of 5G on the market. Unsurprisingly, operators prefer to focus on the new network so as not to be left behind by the competition. We thus count 24,553 5G sites in service at the end of April, most of which are on existing sites. This figure is up from 1.8%.

Nevertheless, Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free must not leave 4G aside. Indeed, operators have until 2024 to cover 100% of the territory if they want to comply with government measures.
