SharePlay will arrive on Macs before the end of the year

SharePlay

In the last edition of the WWDC this year, Apple informed us that one of the novelties that macOS Monterey presented was the compatibility with the function SharePlay that we know in the rest of the company’s devices.

Since September we have been with macOS Monterey in our Macs, and at the moment this function has not been incorporated. Now Apple has published that before the end of the year, we will receive a new macOS Monterey update with said feature implemented and fully operational. We will see then.

Apple officially announced today that SharePlay for Mac will be released as part of a new macOS Monterrey update scheduled for before the end of this year. Great news, without a doubt.

SharePlay is a new Apple feature that gives you the ability to to share App experiences with other users directly from FaceTime. Apple has also provided developers with the tools to implement such SharePlay functionality in their own third-party applications.

On iOS and iPadOS, several native Apple apps support the SharePlay feature, including TV, Music, and Podcasts. The “recipient” users of said content must also be subscribed to the service to enjoy content shared through SharePlay. That is, if you want to share an Apple Music song with a friend of yours, you can do so as long as you are both subscribed to Apple’s music platform.

Devices with SharePlay

SharePlay is currently available on the following devices:

  • iPhone and iPod touch with iOS 15.1 and later
  • iPad with iPadOS 15.1 and later
  • Apple TV with tvOS 15.1 and later.

Not only can you use SharePlay in native Apple applications. SharePlay will be compatible with a number of popular third-party applications, such as Spotify. Apple has highlighted several third-party apps that already support SharePlay, including NBA, TikTok, Twitch, Paramount +, and SHOWTIME.

For example, if you have an Apple TV, you can view shared media on the big screen while using Facetime on your iPhone or iPad. With screen sharing support, you and your friends can surf the web together, look at photos, or watch a video in your favorite app.
