Snapchat to Host Jennifer Lopez Virtual Concert

While Snap doesn’t appear to be particularly interested in the metaverse, at least not in the way Mark Zuckerberg put it, the company’s latest experiment still looks pretty much like a partial implementation of that idea. This is because the social network has announced that it is teaming up with Universal to further host a virtual concert featuring Jennifer Lopez and Colombian pop singer Maluma that viewers can watch as their Bitmoji avatars.

It’s important to note that the concert itself will not take place on the Snapchat app, but potential viewers will still be able to access the show by logging into the concert’s dedicated website with their Snapchat login. Bitmoji user avatars will appear as spectators in the crowd. There will also be several interactive effects that will be available during the show, including the ability to launch a “wave” as well as activate a virtual laser effect. Jennifer Lopez and Maluma will similarly appear as 3D avatars.

The event itself, scheduled for February 3, which will take place today, is timed to coincide with the promotion of the upcoming romantic comedy Marry Me, which also stars Jennifer Lopez and Maluma in the lead roles. And, according to the company, the concert will last about 10 minutes. And in general, virtual concerts were one of the first examples of a metaverse-like experience. In case you’re not aware, Fortnite’s in-game concerts are still very often mentioned in discussions about what exactly a possible metaverse would look like. At the same time, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, said he wants to ensure Fortnite’s publisher is a leader in the field.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, similarly referred to metaverse concerts, writing last year that people in the future will be able to “instantly teleport like a hologram” to such events to attend from anywhere in the world. However, the leaders of Snap talk about the metaverse very differently. In December, Sofia Dominguez, chief executive of Snap AR, told Engadget that the company sees the future not in “escaping to another world,” but in creating experiences that can connect the physical space with the virtual.
