This feature comes after several alerts from child protection associations.

After the scandal on the mental health of adolescents on social networks caused by Facebook and Instagram, the firm had notably announced the establishment of parental controls aimed at protecting its minor users. In a blog post, the social network states that its add friend function will change somewhat. Indeed, adult users will no longer be able to find teenagers so easily in their profile recommendations. “To be discovered in Quick Add by someone else, users under the age of 18 will need to have a certain number of friends in common with that person, which will help ensure that they are it’s about a friend they know in real life”, explains Snapchat.

In addition, the developers clarify that this decision is also intended to prevent dealers from finding “new ways to abuse Snapchat”. The social network is indeed particularly used by drug circles, to the point that the Ministry of the Interior is monitoring it very closely.
