So you can reduce the memory temperature of your RTX 30 by 20%

The main headache for graphics card manufacturers is curiously not to keep the chip temperatures of each model at bay, but rather to dissipate the heat generated by the VRAM memories. For this reason, an intrepid user has acquired a tool that manages to reduce the temperature of the RTX memory by up to twenty%, also without having to change the original heatsink as such. How did you do it?

It is nothing new as such, it is not something revolutionary either, it is simply a piece that has been on the market for many years and that in each generation has been gradually adapted to the requirements of NVIDIA and has now taken shape in the face of the problem VRAM temperature. What is it?

A low-profile copper mid plate, the ultimate solution?

Needless to say and go ahead that it is not a solution that can be adopted by all models of graphics cards for obvious reasons. And it is that there are models that have their own cooling solution based on a mid plate that also and as a general rule introduces and cools the VRM, so be careful with this important detail.

But for those models that use a large cold plate and entrust the cooling of the graphic memories to this, the solution that we see is undoubtedly the most optimal. Why is the big question? It’s simple. Certain manufacturers have left VRAM cooling quite in the background with the excuse that GDDR6X can work up to 100 degrees Celsius and have a maximum operating temperature of up to 120º Cwhich implies a large thermal margin.

Therefore, and given the high temperatures, they have not considered it essential to cool them better and sin with a higher temperature in the GPU itself, saving costs along the way. Therefore, a simple thermal pad kept everything in check and in balance, at least in theory, always at the cost of very high temperatures in said VRAM.

This is how it is possible to reduce the temperature of the RTX memory

The piece is nothing more than a low-profile copper mid plate that has a minimum thickness as an excuse that implies the use of thinner thermal pads, with the consequent comparative offense with the standard options.

High-performance pads are not necessary, since by reducing their thickness to a minimum (0.5 mm) the resistance to thermal passage is reduced and as the mid plate is made of copper it transmits heat faster and through thermal paste to the cold plate, accelerating transfer and improving temperatures by up to 20%.

The data here is clear:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 –> Before: 78° C/88° C -> After: 75° C/70° C
  • mining of ethereum –> Before: 65º C/94º C -> After: 58° C/75° C
  • Octane Bench –> Before: 78° C/92° C -> After: 78° C/76° C

These mid plates are not cheap and cost more than 50 euros as a rule without shipping or thermal paste, but they are the best option for the aforementioned models, where they also date if ease of use are recommended for any user.

The only problem is the guarantee of the graphics card, since for its installation we will have to break the security seal that the models include in their key screw and therefore we would be at the mercy of the GPU working without any type of failure until this one runs out
