Over the last few weeks, much has been said about the metaverse and NFTs. If we focus on these digital goods, there are several companies that are beginning to use them, including some related to video games. But it seems that the popular Steam does not entirely agree.
This is something that we have been talking about in recent times, more after the significant growth in the use of the aforementioned NFT. Likewise, we have told you about some companies in the video game sector that are beginning to present their plans related to all this. There are multiple criticisms received by this type of movement, both from its own workers, and from its users and customers.
But it seems that not all of these firms fully agree with the integration of NFTs in one way or another, in their business model. We must bear in mind that Valve is an important name in this sector, especially for its PC store, the popular Steam. Precisely for this reason lately some have related this proposal to this world of digital goods. But while the gaming community is slowly shifting its focus to NFTs and cryptocurrenciesValve has made its position public.
Specifically and as we have been able to know now, games using all these virtual items have been banned on Steam. This is something that has been revealed in an interview with the CEO of Valve. When asked about the subject, he explained that in his opinion, technology must be separated from the people who use it.
Steam bans games that use NFTs
Consider that people in this digital and virtual space tend to frequently engage in shady activities, mostly of a criminal nature. In parallel, he gave the example of his own company, pointing out when Steam accepted payment in cryptocurrencies. This was removed because most platform users were against. One of the main reasons was the volatility of the aforementioned medium of exchange.
Therefore, paying in cryptocurrencies on Steam made customers very angry. These do not want to be in the hands of volatility when they buy things. For example, a game might cost $400 one day and two the next. So that kind of volatility creates more headaches for users than the use of cryptocurrencies as such. At the same time there was also talk of the Fraudulent transactions in the NFT space. It is being seen how many are involved in fraudulent transactions, clients with whom they generally do not want to do business.
Thus, he stated that at this time his gaming platform does not want to do business with participants in the NFT space. It’s not that I’m against the underlying technology, but rather against those who take advantage and misuse it. They see the whole as one opportunity to scam others, dedicate themselves to money laundering, or other things of the sort that are uninteresting for those affected. From all this it follows that today Valve, and therefore Steam, are little interested in involving their company with NFTs. It is something totally opposite to what companies like Square Enix or Ubisoft are doing.
